Harry Brook replaces Jason Roy as England make late change to ODI World Cup 2023 squad

Defending champions, England, have made a last-minute alteration to their plans for the ODI World Cup 2023, replacing Jason Roy with Harry Brook from their provisional squad. Roy, a crucial part of England's previous successes, especially during their victory in the World Cup at home four years ago, has seen a dip in form and struggled with back spasms.

Captain Jos Buttler had hinted at Roy's possible inclusion for the upcoming series against Ireland, but the selectors ultimately decided to exclude him from the squad. This could potentially mark the end of Roy's international career, as he had previously mentioned that this World Cup would be his swansong after rejecting a central contract with ECB.

Despite scoring vital centuries earlier this year, Roy's overall performance since the last World Cup and recent struggles with back injuries led to this decision. Luke Wright, England's national selector, emphasized the confidence in the chosen squad, expressing that they believe this team has the potential to secure victory in the World Cup. The strong pool of white-ball players and exceptional performances against New Zealand showcased the team's depth and prowess.

Harry Brook was initially not part of the provisional squad after Ben Stokes reversed his retirement decision, making himself available for the ODI World Cup defence. But since then Brook has played some exceptional knocks. And despite his recent modest scores against New Zealand, he has showcased remarkable potential and promises a valuable addition to the team.
