England hoping to tempt Ben Stokes out of ODI retirement for 2023 World Cup

England's white-ball coach Matthew Mott says he's hoping Ben Stokes can come out of ODI retirement and play for the Three Lions in the 50-over World Cup next year

Ben Stokes - England's man for the big occasion.

The all-rounder first starred for England in the 2019 ODI World Cup Final and then his heroics in the 2022 T20 World Cup final sealed the title for the Three Lions Down Under.

And now, England's perennial crisis man is once again the talk of the town, with limited-overs coach Matthew Mott hopeful of convincing the all-rounder to take back his retirement from ODIs in order to play the 2023 World Cup.

Earlier this year in July, Stokes had announced his retirement from 50-overs cricket, citing players' burnout amidst the hectic scheduling.

The 31-year-old, who is England's current Test captain said that his body would not be able to perform at the highest level across all three formats and that he wanted to focus on leading the Test team and also give his best in T20Is.

However, Matthew Mott said that Stokes can be a very valuable asset to the team and he can always take back his retirement, but that was Stokes' decision to make. Mott also backed Stokes to do what was right for English cricket, hoping he can be on the plane to India next year for the marquee 50-over event.
