Dean Elgar to bid farewell to international cricket post India-South Africa Test series

Former South African captain Dean Elgar has declared his retirement from international cricket, slated to take effect after the upcoming two-Test series against India, which begins on December 26 in Centurion.

Since his debut in 2012, Elgar has been a stalwart of the Test team, playing 84 Tests and amassing 5,146 runs at an average of 37.28. His illustrious career includes 13 centuries and 23 half-centuries. Elgar, a left-handed batsman, has been a key figure in South Africa's cricket landscape for over a decade.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) released a statement saying, "Elgar will fittingly end his international career with the two Test matches — the first to be played at his home ground in Centurion from 26–30 December and the second at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, from 03–07 January." Newlands holds a special place in Elgar's career, being the venue where he scored his first Test runs.

In addition to his Test career, the 36-year-old has also featured in eight ODIs, with his last participation in limited-overs cricket dating back to 2018.

Reflecting on his career, Elgar expressed, "Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have." He announced the Indian home series as his final international outing, saying, "As they say, 'all good things come to an end', and the Indian home series will be my last."

Elgar's tenure as South Africa's Test captain was marked by success, with nine wins in 19 matches, along with seven losses and four draws.

Enoch Nkwe, South Africa's director of cricket, praised Elgar's contributions, describing him as "a real old-school cricketer that can dig in, absorb and fight." He acknowledged Elgar's fearless approach and leadership, particularly as captain during challenging times, adding, "He has always given everything for his country and never showed any fear, no matter the opposition." Nkwe also emphasized that Elgar's presence in the game will be greatly missed.
