The Indian Premier League (IPL) was on Friday suspended because of the deepening military confrontation between India and Pakistan with the BCCI saying that national interest trumps other considerations at a time when the country is responding to a terror attack and unwarranted aggression from across the border.
A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of the ongoing edition since the cancellation of Thursday's match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
"The BCCI has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing IPL with immediate effect for one week," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated in a press release, after early information from the Board suggested that the suspension was indefinite.
"Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders," it added The high-profile league was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata as per the original schedule. The Board would look to conduct the remaining 16 matches (12 league and four knockouts) at an opportune time and there is speculation that the month of September could be an option if the scheduled Asia Cup is scrapped.
"At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country," the Board statement read.
"The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan's armed forces," it added.
The BCCI said that while cricket remains a national passion, it is not greater than the sovereignty, integrity, and security of the country.
"The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation," it stated.
The Board also thanked stakeholders like the official broadcaster, the title sponsor and all associate partners for "putting national interest above all other considerations." India launched missile attacks on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir a fortnight after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed.
On Thursday, a blackout was enforced in several districts in India including Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Mohali in Punjab and Union Territory Chandigarh amid air raid alarms and reports of explosion-like sounds in Jammu.
Earlier in the day, the Pakistan Super League was moved to the UAE after Indian drone attacks in Lahore and Rawalpindi among other cities.
The military confrontation had caused significant anxiety among the foreign players, according to league sources and they will be flying back over the next few days. Sixty two overseas players were signed up by the 10 franchises at the mega-auction last year.
"The players are doing well but of course there is concern among them after seeing all that has happened," an IPL team official told PTI when asked about the foreign players' state of of mind.
The players of Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are currently on their way to the national capital from Dharamsala by road.
On Friday, the IPL bandwagon was in Lucknow for the game between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which now stands suspended.
"Nation first," posted LSG on its official social media page after the league's suspension.
In Sydney, Cricket Australia stated that it was closely monitoring the situation in both India and Pakistan, which shifted its flagship Pakistan Super League (PSL) to the UAE early this morning owing to the Indian military action.
New Zealand's players association had also expressed concerns about the security scenario in India and Pakistan due to the ongoing conflict.
A similar statement was issued by the Cricket West Indies, whose players are also involved in both the IPL and the PSL.
Not the first IPL disruption&nbsp;
It's not the first time that external factors have caused a disruption to the league, which has been taken thrice out of the country in the past due to varied reasons. In 2009, the entire tournament was moved to South Africa because of security issues amid the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2020, the tournament was played in the UAE in September, instead of the usual April-May window, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The next year, the event began in India in a bio-bubble but was halted when players began testing positive for the deadly infection. The league was eventually completed in the UAE in September that year.
It remains to be seen how the BCCI will complete the ongoing edition after this break.
The Indian team is scheduled to be in England next month for a five-match Test series that will end in the first week of August.&nbsp;

PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi alleged that India had targeted the Rawalpindi cricket stadium in the most recent strike inside Pakistan to disrupt the PSL.
However, the Indian defence ministry has made it clear that only the air defence radars and systems were targeted on Thursday after Pakistan tried to hit 15 places in northern and western regions in India on Wednesday night.
"...in view of the extremely irresponsible and dangerous Indian act of targeting the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, which was manifestly done to disrupt the ongoing Pakistan Super League X, the PCB has decided to shift the remaining matches to UAE," Naqvi claimed.
The PCB chief said the shift to UAE was done so that domestic as well as foreign cricketers' concerns are suitably addressed.
"As a responsible organisation that has overcome adversities repeatedly and ensured that the game of cricket flourishes, it was important for us to ensure the mental well-being of all players participating in the PSL," he said.
Earlier on Thursday the PCB called off a scheduled match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings at the Rawalpindi stadium.
Reports in the British media stated that the English players competing in the league were considering leaving it due to security concerns.

"That is the love and affection I have gotten throughout. Not to forget I am 42 (43). I have played a long time. A lot of them don't know when it is going to be my last time, so they want to come and see me play," Dhoni said after CSK's two-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders here on Wednesday.
Dhoni, who underwent a knee surgery in 2023, has continued to battle fitness concerns.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming recently admitted that the veteran "can't bat 10 overs running full stick." All of this has contributed in building speculation that the ongoing season is his last outing in the league.
The enigmatic wicketkeeper-batter said he is fully aware of where he stands in his storied career right now but will not make a decision without deliberating hard over it and fully assessing his fitness.
"There is no escaping the fact (that I am in the last phase of my career). After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6-8 months to see if my body can take this pressure.
"Nothing to decide now but the love and affection I have seen is excellent," Dhoni said.
The win was only the third of CSK's disappointing season marred by inconsistency. With play-off hopes dashed, Dhoni said the focus is now on testing bench strength. "There were a few things that did not go our way.
You could get emotional about it, talk about the pride factor but you have to be practical about it. "(You) want to be competitive but you also want answers - which batter can fit where, which bowler can bowl where, according to the conditions and all. When we started, hardly anyone was scoring. "We are out of the tournament, so you give them a chance, see how they react.
It is the approach, the mental toughness that you want to check. The most technically-correct batter does not always score the runs, if you have good awareness...there is a chance to be consistent.

But it was MS Dhoni who had the final say -- possibly for the last time at this venue -- finishing the chase with his trademark calm and power, as CSK completed the task with two balls to spare.

Brevis began the over with a reprieve, a powerful six that burst through the hands of Raghuvanshi, and never looked back. He followed it with two more sixes and three fours in the space of six balls, reaching a sensational 22-ball half-century.

KKR lost further momentum with Ravindra Jadeja taking the wicket of the in-form skipper Ajinkya Rahane who missed out his fifty by two runs in a 33-ball knock studded with four fours and two sixes.
The boundaries dried up and at one stage, they went 24 balls without a single four in the middle overs.
Their hopes then rested on Russell, fresh from a match-winning fifty in the previous game.
The explosive Jamaican shifted gears, smashing Jadeja for two fours and a six, and then launched Ahmad into the stands with a massive six off a googly.
But Ahmad had the last laugh, deceiving Russell (38 off 21 balls) with another well-disguised googly to end his explosive stint.
In his final over, Ahmad also removed Rinku Singh, wrapping up a terrific spell that broke KKR&rsquo;s backbone.
From 67/1 in six overs, KKR managed just 112 runs in the next 14 overs, as CSK spinners collectively gave away only 55 runs in last five overs, throttling the scoring on a sluggish, turning track.&nbsp;

"Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites.

Rohit captained India to the World Test Championship final against Australia and save the last couple of indifferent series against New Zealand at home and the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia.
India will have a new Test captain for the five-Test series in England with possible candidates being Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.
Rohit endured a particularly difficult run during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where he had to drop himself from the playing XI owing to poor form but he had ruled out retirement at that stage.
There was also widespread speculation about his differences with Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, who had vowed to end the "star culture" in Indian cricket after taking charge last year in July.
Both steadfastly denied the chatter but Gambhir has time and again made it clear that only performance would ensure selection in the team.

Chasing a below-par 156, the Titans were guilty of an ordinary start which saw them lagging behind the DLS par-score when the rain impeded the game for the first time.
But eventually they managed to reach the revised target of 147 off the last ball of the match which was reduced to 19 overs. The former champions now have 16 points, same as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but they are perched atop the table on account of better net run rate -- +0.79 against +0.48.
However, GT had to brave a second rain interruption close to midnight. On that occasion, they were 132 for six in 18 overs, needing another 24 off 12 balls.
The break resulted in the target being revised to 147, and when the play resumed at 12.30 GT needed to score 15 runs in one over.
Rahul Tewatia (11 not out) hit the first ball off Deepak Chahar for a four and Gerald Coetzee (12) hit the third for a six, but the bowler overstepped on the next delivery.
Even though Chahar dismissed Coetzee and brought down the equation to one run off the final ball, Arshad Khan and Tewatia scrambled for a quick single to record a memorable win for the Titans.
"Lot of emotions. Most of them were frustrating because at one point, we were ahead. It's always good to have a W (beside team's name). The game plans were different in the power play. There was wind and rain, and it felt like a Test match for the first four or five overs," said Gill during the post-match presentation.
Before the break, Jasprit Bumrah (2/19) and Trent Boult (2/22) delivered a fast bowling masterclass to bring Mumbai Indians back into the contest.
Unfazed by their below-par 155/8 and knowing that GT were ahead in terms of par score after the first break, MI struck back hard as Bumrah removed Shubman Gill (43) and Shahrukh Khan (6) in quick succession.
Boult accounted for the dangerous Sherfane Rutherford (28) while concussion substitute Ashwani Kumar dismissed Rashid Khan (2) to turn the game on its head.
But it was the dismissal of GT skipper Gill, who was cleaned up by Bumrah with a nip-backer, saw the visitors&rsquo; fight petering out even though the target was well within their reach.
The contest also marked the first-ever instance in this IPL season when none of GT&rsquo;s top three batters &mdash; B Sai Sudharsan (5), Jos Buttler (30) and Gill (43) &mdash; scored a fifty.
A pivotal moment had earlier arrived in the 12th over when Gill, batting on 35, mistimed one horribly off Ashwani which went high in the air, but the ball popped out of Tilak Varma&rsquo;s hands who came running in from long-on.
But Ashwani struck on the next ball getting Buttler, who hit three fours and a six to make 30 off 27 balls, caught behind.
MI had also made the early running through Bumrah as the ace pacer delivered two measly overs for six runs in the power play.
Boult also kept a tight leash after striking in the second over when he found an edge off Sudharsan&rsquo;s (5) bat, forcing GT batting mainstays Gill and Buttler to see through the initial overs.
A cautious approach meant GT managed only 29/1 in the power play and they were behind the DLS required score as it began to drizzle along with heavy wind.
But the momentum changed when Buttler smacked two fours off Chahar in the seventh over.
Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya bowled 11 deliveries while completing the eighth over, giving away a total of 18 runs which included a four and a six. Will Jacks was hit for 15 runs in the 13th over, as GT gained some momentum.
Gujarat recovered from early fielding howlers while spin ace Rashid Khan (1/21) rediscovered his mojo to restrict Mumbai Indians to a below-par 155/8.
As many as three dropped catches in the power play notwithstanding, Gujarat fought back through their spinners Rashid and R Sai Kishore (2/34) to grab control of the game in which Mumbai Indians crumbled against pressure.
Jacks, who was dropped twice on 0 and 29, struck a 35-ball 53 (5x4s, 3x6s) while Suryakumar Yadav made a brisk 34 but the rest of the MI batters couldn't respond to the challenge.

In the list of batsmen who have scored the most centuries in international cricket, after Tendulkar and Kohli, are Australia's Ricky Ponting (71), Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (63), South Africa's Jacques Kallis (62) and Hashim Amla (55), Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene (54).
Kohli's contemporaries England's Joe Root (53), Australia's Steve Smith (48) and New Zealand's Kane Williamson (48) are also at the fag end of their careers and there is no chance of them even getting close to Tendulkar's record.

Amid regional tensions, IPL teams Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals evacuated due to security concerns after a drone intrusion attempt by Pakistan.

Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals contingents were on Friday evacuated from Dharamsala and were escorted to the Jalandhar railway station in batches through Hoshiarpur amid tight security, Kangra's Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri has revealed.
The squads are currently in transit to New Delhi aboard a special train, said the official.
The IPL match between Punjab and Delhi was called off mid-way on Thursday after Pakistan attempted to invade the airspace near Chandigarh with a drone attack, mandating an Indian retaliation.
"On Friday morning, the entire contingents of both teams, including players, coaching staff, and broadcast personnel, were moved in around 40 to 50 small vehicles from Dharamsala to Hoshiarpur, located at the Punjab border," the official said.
She said this convoy was escorted by the Kangra Police and the Punjab Police took over the security arrangements once the vehicles reached Hoshiarpur.
From there, they were moved to Jalandhar to board the specially arranged train.
Speaking on the evacuation process on Thursday, Agnihotri said: "The stadium was cleared within 20 minutes. Our first priority was the safety of everyone present. Both teams' players were immediately called back from the ground and shifted to their respective hotels under tight security." Earlier in the day, the IPL was suspended because of the military confrontation, which was triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were gunned down.
The BCCI stated that national interest trumps other considerations at a time when the country is responding to a terror attack and unwarranted aggression from across the border.&nbsp;
