A persistent rain played a spoilsport on Day 1 of the first Ashes Test after Australia bundled out England for 147 at The Gabba in Brisbane. England captain Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat under the overcast conditions.

Mitchell Starc provided the Kangaroos' first breakthrough as he cleaned up Rory Burns off the first delivery, equalling an 85-year-old record.

England never recovered from the early blow and in the sixth over they were reduced to 11-3 after Josh Hazlewood removed Dawid Malan and Joe Root.

The newly appointed captain Pat Cummins also made full use of overcast conditions and get rid of Ben Stokes, who scored only 5.

Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler occupied the crease for a brief period and stitched a fifty-run stand but both got out in their 30s as England innings slid further.

Cummins had a perfect outing as Test skipper, becoming the second Aussie captain after Richie Benaud to take a five-wicket-haul in the Ashes series. Benaud's achieved the feat in 1962 at the same venue.
