Ashes 2023: Moeen Ali reveals conversation with Ben Stokes before returning from retirement | ENG vs AUS

Moeen Ali, who was absent from the England squad during the previous Ashes encounter, has returned from Test retirement and will be in action against the Aussies this summer.

The spin-bowling all-rounder's retirement from Test cricket had left a void in the Joe Root-captained side during their last tour of Australia.

However, as the upcoming series approaches, the dynamics have shifted. Moeen has made a decisive comeback to Test cricket, bringing an added dimension to the English squad.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Moeen revealed a playful exchange with teammate Ben Stokes, sharing “Stokes sent me a message saying: Ashes?’, I responded with LOL."

Since his Test debut in 2014, Moeen has showcased his skills in the longer format, culminating in his last Test appearance against India at the Oval in September 2021.

With 2,914 runs to his name in 64 tests at an average of 28.29, as well as 195 wickets collected through his off-spin, Moeen has left an indelible mark on the game. With Jack Leach ruled out, Moeen became the go-to man for the Three Lions.

Rob Key, the ECB men's managing director, confirmed the decision to invite Moeen back into the Test cricket fold, stating, "We reached out to 'Mo' earlier this week about returning to Test cricket. Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play test cricket again."

Key emphasized the value of Moeen's vast experience and his all-round abilities, expressing confidence that they will greatly contribute to England's Ashes campaign.

As the Ashes series looms ahead, Moeen's reintegration into the England squad promises an intriguing twist, adding depth and expertise to England's pursuit of victory against the World Test Champions.
