Ajit Agarkar: Former Indian cricketer applies for national selector role

Ajit Agarkar applied for the national selection committee post on the same day the Delhi Capitals announced they will not be renewing his contract as Assistant coach.

Ajit Agarkar: Former Indian cricketer applies for national selector role

Former Indian all-rounder Ajit Agarkar has submitted his application for a position on the national selection committee. While Agarkar himself remained tight-lipped about the matter, a member of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed the development to Cricbuzz.

With an illustrious career representing India in 221 matches across formats, Agarkar (45) could emerge as a strong contender for the chairman's post if selected.

Interestingly, the news about Agarkar applying for the selection committee role came the same day Delhi Capitals announced their decision to part ways with him. Agarkar had previously served as the chief selector for Mumbai and held the assistant coach position for the Capitals for two years. According to the franchise management, his contract was not renewed.

Since the resignation of Chetan Sharma as the chief selector in February following a sting operation by a news channel, the position has remained vacant. While the outgoing chairman hailed from the North Zone, the appointment of the selection committee is not bound by any zonal compulsions as per the BCCI constitution.

Currently, the selection committee comprises Sib Sundar Das (East), S Sharath (South), Subroto Banerjee (Central), and Ankola (West). The application process will close on June 30, and the new selector or chief selector is expected to be announced next week.
