Stockholm to Launch P-12 Electric Ferry, Offering Eco-Friendly, Smoother Rides

This fall, Stockholm residents will get their own 30-passenger electric ferry between Ekerö, a popular suburb, and central Stockholm, home to the historic City Hall, which will help in cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions.
The P-12 is an electric ferry that floats just above the water, similar to a landspeeder from "Star Wars."

It's created by Candela, a Swedish company that has been improving this technology since 2016. It uses a hydrofoil to lift the boat above the water, which cuts down on resistance and saves energy.

A 2022 study found that the P-12 not only produces 97.5% less carbon dioxide than diesel ferries — but it also gives a smoother ride. Candela's P-12s will soon operate in Berlin, and eight are being built for NEOM, Saudi Arabia's $1.5 trillion megacity, set for delivery in 2025. Candela reps also did test rides at the New York Harbor this past August.

However, electric ferries have been there for a while. Norway launched the first electric ferry in 2015, and Finland went fully electric in 2017. Recently, there's been a surge electric ferries in countries like Spain, India, Portugal, Denmark, Thailand, and New Zealand.
