As Oprah Winfrey once said, "Failure is another stepping stone to greatness."

The Museum of Failure is a proof that even successful businesses can have bad ideas. An initiative by Dr. Samuel West, this museum in New York showcases a collection of failed products and services from all over the world.

As per West, "seeing massive corporations fail when they try something new, gives us permission to fail when we try out new things."

From Google Glass to Pringles to Coca Cola's Coke II; the museum has listed over 150 failed products from well-established organisations that are popular across the world. It is currently open in Brooklyn’s Industry City until June 2023. There is even a wall where visitors can share their failures.

Here are some of the best flops displayed at the Museum of Failure:

      1. IKEA a.i.r sofa (1980s)

Affordable home furniture brand IKEA took DIY and transportable sofa to extreme level with its line of inflatable furniture; the infamous IKEA a.i.r. The valves of the sofa constantly leaked and needed re-pumping. However, the product did last almost a decade.

      2. Nike Magneto (1995-97)

Famous for its sneakers and gym wear, Nike created a pair of futuristic sunglasses that didn't have temples (the part that goes over your ear). The weird part was in order to wear them you had to glue magnets on your face so the shades could clip-on, which was a disaster back then.

      3. Pringles (1996 – 1999)

Your favourite Chips were not a hit at first. The fat-free chips contained the controversial additive Olestra which caused gastric issues and diarrhea. Pringles became famous not for the taste but for causing stomach issues.

      4. Nokia N-Gage (2003 – 2005)

With this innovation, Nokia tried to combine mobile phones and game consoles into one device. The device had to be disassembled to play games. And to use it as a phone, the user had to hold the phone sideways, with its thin edge against their head. Hence, people mocked it by calling it a Taco phone.

      5. Spray-on Condom (2006-2008)

Initiated by German entrepreneur Jan Vinzenz Krause, the spray-on condom had major issues. One of them was that it needed too much time to dry. The product could not make it to the market but lives on at the Museum of Failure.

Few other popular failed products in the list:

      • Colgate Frozen Beef Lasagna (early 1980s)
      • Apple Pippin (1996-97)
      • Heinz Coloured Ketchup (2000-06)
      • ESPN phone (2006)
      • TwitterPeek (2009-2010)
      • Rejuvenique beauty mask (1990 – 1990)
