Holi 2022: Quirky festivals around the world as colourful as Holi

In India, the onset of Spring and the victorious triumph of good over evil calls for colourful celebrations. Just like Holi, countries across the world dip into the zest of celebrations with a happy mess!

From playing with fruit pulp to getting dirty in the mud, here’s a sneak-peek of a few quirky festivals around the world as colourful as Holi.

La Tomatina

The Valencian town of Bunol in eastern Spain gets drenched in hues of red with the annual La Tomatina festival usually held in August. Thousands of people gather to indulge in a tomato battle. The inspiration for the festival, reportedly, comes from a food fight between local children in 1945 in the region.

Battle of the Oranges

Every year, thousands of people dressed in their 'battle gear' gather in the northern Italian town of Ivrea for the traditional Battle of the Oranges. Orangiers come together and hurl almost 500,000 oranges at one another!

Chinchilla Melon Festival

Chinchilla, dubbed as the melon capital of Australia, celebrates the mighty fruit once every two years. From skiing on the fruit to smashing them for world records and melon dashing, there's alot in store at the Chinchilla Melon Fest.

Boryeong Mud Festival

A small sleepy town, called Boryeong in South Korea comes to life at the annual mudfest celebrated in Summer. People from across the globe throng to the town to get muddy! Mud wrestling, mud slides and obstacles race are just a few of the activities at the 10-day long celebration. With its inception in 1999, the festival aimed at promoting the local mud, considered rich in minerals good for the skin. The beach-side party soon turned into a reason to rejoice for tourists with mud massages and mud pools.

Songkran: Thailand's Water Festival

The Buddhist New Year, also called the Songkran Festival in Thailand, is the biggest water fight of the year. It is celebrated in April, when you will see people with water guns spraying water at each other. Pouring water is believed to wash away bad luck.
