World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2022: Here’s why this day is of great significance

Every year, 28th May is observed as World Menstrual Hygiene Day. This day is observed to raise and promote awareness amongst women about the importance of menstrual hygiene. It was first observed in the year 2014 by German-based NGO 'WASH United’.

There is still a lot of stigma associated with menstruation. Women feel hesitant to openly talk about menstruation, even today. This results in negligence in menstrual hygiene which may lead to infections and health problems.

So, here are some tips that you should follow to ensure good menstrual hygiene.

Change your napkin after every 6-8 hours as using the same sanitary napkin for an extended period of time can lead to infections.

Use only one napkin at a time as using two napkins can lead to irritation and dryness.

During your periods, make sure to keep essential period stuff with you at all times. This may include extra sanitary napkins, hand sanitizer, tissue paper, medicines, etc.

This date was chosen as women usually menstruate after a period of 28 days. This day is of huge significance as observing it will encourage women to come forward and talk about menstruation openly.
