Why should you stop sucking your stomach in for pictures? Health experts warn

In the age of social media and constant photo-sharing, people often strive for the perfect picture, seeking to look their best and impress their followers. One common practice is "sucking in" the stomach to achieve a slimmer appearance. However, health experts caution against this seemingly harmless habit. Recent research has revealed the potential dangers of constantly holding in your breath and the adverse effects it may have on your body. This article aims to shed light on why you should stop sucking in your stomach for pictures and prioritize your well-being over appearances.

The desire to look trimmer and more attractive in photos leads many to resort to the age-old technique of sucking in their stomachs. While this may temporarily give the illusion of a slimmer waistline, health experts warn that the practice can have severe implications on overall well-being.

According to a recent article published in the New York Post on August 1, 2023, health experts have unveiled the disturbing consequences of regularly sucking in your stomach. The act of holding your breath and tensing your abdominal muscles places unnecessary strain on various organs, potentially leading to a series of health issues like impaired breathing and lung function, gastrointestinal distress, musculoskeletal issues, and negative psychological impact.

As per Dr. Robert Glatter, tensing the abdominal muscles can also impede the proper functioning of the digestive system. The constriction may cause discomfort, and bloating, and potentially exacerbate existing gastrointestinal conditions like acid reflux or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Other than this, it may also cause a weakened pelvic floor and that can affect sexual life.
