An alert has been issued regarding the West Nile virus in Kerala which is spread by a mosquito species called Culex. It typically spreads more during the summer season when mosquitoes are more active.

What is West Nile?

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, primarily by a mosquito called Culex. This virus can infect both birds and humans. Typically, it spreads more during the summer when mosquitoes are more active.

Symptoms of West Nile virus

Fever: Most people experience fever, which can come on suddenly or gradually.

Chills: Patients may also experience chills along with fever.

Headache: Headache is a common symptom.

Fatigue: Patients may feel tiredness or fatigue.

Body Aches: Pain and discomfort in the body can occur.

Nausea or Diarrhea: Some individuals may experience nausea or diarrhea.

Skin Rash: Small bumps or rashes on the skin are possible symptoms.

What is the prevention of the West Nile virus?

Use mosquito repellent: Use mosquito repellent, especially when going outside or at night.

Wear long-sleeved clothes: Wear long sleeves and pants at night to prevent mosquito bites.

Mosquito nets: Install mosquito nets on windows and doors at home to keep mosquitoes out.

Prevent water accumulation: Keep areas where water can accumulate clean to prevent the virus, and avoid going to places where mosquitoes are abundant.

Evening time: Mosquito activity is higher in the evening, so if possible, stay indoors.
