UTI cases on the rise around the world: Can meat be the issue?

Do you know that UTIs are on the rise globally and the reason can be inside your refrigerator? Between 1990 and 2019, the number of UTIs reported around the world increased from 252 million to 405 million.

According to a study published by the journal One Health, researchers have uncovered E. coli-tainted meat as the reason behind the rise in UTI cases.

Let us know more.

What's in the fridge that is causing UTIs?

According to a report by National Geographic, a 2023 study estimates that contaminated meat causes nearly half a million UTIs in the United States annually.

While traditional risk factors like hygiene and sexual activity are well-known, recent research highlights a surprising factor contributing to this issue: contaminated meat.

Chicken and turkey products, often contaminated with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli, can serve as "food reservoirs" for these drug-resistant bacteria.

Consuming undercooked or improperly handled poultry allows these bacteria to enter the gut, where they may evolve and spread, potentially leading to urinary tract infections.

Safe food handling and storage practices are crucial to preventing foodborne urinary tract infections (UTIs). By following guidelines from organizations like the FDA, the risk of contamination and infection can be greatly minimized.

Properly cooking, cleaning, and refrigerating food are essential steps to avoid harmful bacteria like E. coli from entering the body and causing potential health issues.
