Suffering from acid reflux in winter? Here is why it happens and how to treat it

During these cold winter months, have you experienced a burning sensation in your chest, a feeling that does not go away? Have you felt a nagging cough that won't die down? Well, you may be suffering from acid reflux! Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach.

If you are anyone you know is experiencing something similar, here is how you can treat it and what are the main reasons behind facing this uncomfortable condition.

Why do we get more acid reflux during winter?

During winter, many lifestyle and food habits contribute to the increased acid relfux. Richer holiday meals with higher fat and sugar content can be a big cause for heartburn. People also tend to eat more hot and comfort food like stews, casseroles, and pasta dishes.

We also consume less water during winter, leading to thicker stomach acid and dehydration. Colder weather often means less time spent outdoors and exercising. Physical activity helps with digestion and can alleviate reflux symptoms.

Lesser exposure to the sun can also increase the symptoms of acid reflux.

How to reduce acid reflux?

The first thing you should do to reduce acid reflux is a major lifestyle change. Start practicing yoga and exercise regularly. Try making the most of the sun and soak in some Vitamin D.
You can also try many home remedies like fennel and cumin tea. These drinks reduce the feeling of burning which is linked to acid reflux. Chewing on a pinch of Ajwain and rock salt and gulping it with a glass of warm water can provide instant relief.

However, if symptoms persist long, make sure to contact a medical professional for advice.
