Study suggests older adults should drink more coffee than you'd expect

A recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, has unveiled that adults who consumed higher quantities of caffeinated beverages exhibited lower levels of frailty and demonstrated significantly better physical function in their later years.

The research findings strongly suggest that the consumption of these caffeinated beverages during midlife could be linked to a notable decrease in the likelihood of experiencing physical frailty in late life.

The study involved an extensive survey of 12,000 participants, all of Chinese descent and based in Singapore, ranging in age from 45 to 74, spanning a period of 20 years. This comprehensive survey took into account various factors such as dietary habits, medical history, sociodemographic characteristics, physical measurements, energy levels, exercise routines, and sleep duration.

Through rigorous analysis, researchers were able to establish an independent association between the consumption of coffee, black tea, or green tea during midlife and a substantial reduction in the risk of experiencing physical frailty in later stages of life.

Furthermore, individuals who consumed four or more cups of coffee daily exhibited a significantly lower likelihood of experiencing frailty in their later years compared to those who did not partake in daily coffee consumption. Likewise, regular consumption of black or green tea also demonstrated a considerable decrease in the likelihood of frailty when compared to non-tea drinkers.
