Study reveals using oral contraceptives leads to higher risk of breast cancer

A recent study established the link between the usage of oral contraceptives and the increased risk of breast cancer. Know more about it.

Many women across the world use oral contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies. However, a recent study released by the University of Oxford reportedly established the link between the usage of progestogen and the increased risk of breast cancer.

The study was published in PLOS Medicine based on data from 9,498 women who developed breast cancer in the age group of the 20s and 40s.
After the usage of oral contraceptives for 5 years it was found that almost 8 in every 100,000 women in the age group of 16 to 20 and 265 in every 100,000 aged between 35 to 39 were found to have developed breast cancer.

Most contraceptive pills contain oestrogen and progestogen, which are responsible for increasing the risk of breast cancer by 20-30 per cent among users.
