National Safe Motherhood Day 2024: 3 essential tips for new lactating mothers shared by gynaecologist

National Safe Motherhood Day is observed in India on April 11th every year. Speaking exclusively with Editorji, Dr. Ashima Gulia, Senior consultant obstetrics and gynaecologist shares insights on safe and healthy breastfeeding for new mothers.

Safe breastfeeding, safe motherhood

Breastfeeding is a natural process, but a lot of mothers face difficulty feeding their babies after giving birth. Breast milk is sometimes not produced naturally in some new mothers, and they need help and assistance from experts. New mothers are advised to take suggestions and see doctors if they face such problems.

Dr. Ashima Gulia told, that every mother should practice breast feeding and prepare themselves during the pregnancy period even before the breastfeeding journey begins.

Here are 3 important tips shared by Dr. Ashima Gulia that will help new moms to have a comfortable breastfeeding experience.

1. According to her, the first one hour after the delivery is crucial. It is also called the golden hour.

2. Dr. Gulia suggests taking help of a lactating consultant in case the mother faces difficulty during the process of breast feeding.

3. The doctor advises drinking a glass of water after every feed and creating a nursing section near the mother.

Significance and theme of 'National safe motherhood day 2024'

The day aims to raise awareness about the proper healthcare and maternity facilities provided to women during and post-pregnancy, ensuring their safety and well-being.

This year the theme for national motherhood day is ‘Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities for Optimal Maternal Health’ which aims to highlight the crucial role that families and communities play in supporting new mothers throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of maternal health and seeks to reduce maternal mortality rates by promoting safe motherhood practices, improving access to healthcare services, and empowering women with knowledge about maternal health.
