National Cancer Awareness Day 2023: Know how air pollution may also cause cancer; experts weigh in

National Cancer Awareness Day 2023: The heavy pollution plaguing cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Agra is a growing cause for concern. It not only clouds the skies but also threatens the health of their residents. Doctors are witnessing a surge in patients suffering from a range of health hazards, with respiratory problems and cardiovascular issues topping the list.

The long-term exposure to these hazardous pollutants has even raised the specter of an increased risk of cancer. Urgent measures are needed to combat this alarming issue and protect the well-being of the people in these areas.

Air pollution may cause cancer

Heavy pollution in cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Agra is a growing cause for concern. Amidst this, Dr. Piyush Ranjan of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), says that exposure to outdoor air pollution can also cause cancer.

Speaking with news agency ANI, Dr. Ranjan said that there is scientific evidence that establishes air pollution’s relationship with different types of cancer. He said "It is important to understand that air pollution affects various systems of the body, apart from causing respiratory diseases. Pollution has direct relations with coronary artery diseases like heart attack, brain stroke, and arthritis. We have scientific evidence that establishes its relationship with different types of cancer."

Air pollution, as cautioned by experts, has the potential to induce cancer through various mechanisms. One of these involves DNA damage, a precursor to the formation of cancerous cells.
