Mumps cases rise across Himachal Pradesh: Know treatment, prevention and symptoms

More than 35 children have been affected by the mumps virus in Himachal Pradesh and the cases are on the rise. For the uninitiated, mumps is a viral infection caused by the paramyxovirus virus. It predominantly impacts the salivary glands, causing enlargement and inflammation, typically affecting the parotid glands situated below and in front of the ears. However, it can affect other organs like the pancreas, testes, ovaries, and central nervous system.

However there are some simple and effective ways to prevent catching this virus. Let us learn more!

What are the symptoms?

Some common symptoms of mumps are fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands.

How contagious is mumps?

Mumps is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or through direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

Prevention and cure

There is no specific treatment for mumps. Doctors mainly advise patients to rest, and drink enough water and if pain increases, patients are prescribed medicines for pain relief.

You can also try some desi nuskas and apply cold or warm compresses to swollen glands.

Make sure to stay at home during this period and always wear a mask. Prioritise sanitising your hands and covering your mouth while sneezing.
