Heart health: What to do and what not to do, 5 top things for a healthier heart this summer

Heart health: What to do and what not to do, 5 top things for a healthier heart this summer

Summer is here and so is the excessive need to have cold drinks, sit in the AC for long and limit going out. However, some of your summer habits may be super dangerous and can harm your heart health. While it is natural to crave ac and sugary beverages, one must avoid them as it can lead to excess fat deposits around internal organs like the liver and heart. Let us learn more about how some habits may be detrimental to your heart.

5 habits to avoid during summers

Do not forget to hydrate

Dehydration is a significant concern during the summer, as higher temperatures can lead to fluid loss. When the body is dehydrated, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the bloodstream, which can strain the heart muscle.

Forget sugary beverages

While cold sodas and sweetened drinks may seem refreshing in hot weather, they can badly affect the heart when consumed in excess. Sugary beverages are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of heart disease.

Exercise is important

The summer heat can sometimes discourage physical activity, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. However, not stepping out for a walk or run can be harmful to heart health as it increases the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days.

Eating heavy meals is a big 'no'

Summer gatherings often involve barbecues, picnics, and outdoor parties where heavy, high-fat foods are commonly served. Consuming large portions of fatty meats, fried foods, and rich desserts can put a strain on the heart and increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Avoid sun exposure

Prolonged exposure to the sun during the summer months can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and potentially heatstroke, all of which can strain the heart.
