From journalists to party workers: Tips to keep yourself safe from this scorching heat during elections

The campaigning and coverage of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are going on in the country amidst the rising temperature in most states.
Whether it’s the hard working journalists doing roadshows, live coverages or the party workers doing rallies, the scorching heat is equally harsh for everyone and here are some helpful tips to keep themselves protected from heat stroke, dehydration and other adverse effects of the heat waves.

What you must eat

When you're out in the sun most of the hours, it's important to stay hydrated and nourished. Consume foods that can help replenish your body and protect your skin. Add fresh fruits like watermelon, muskmelon and cucumbers in your diet. Foods rich in healthy fats, like avocados, nuts, and seeds also maintain skin health and provide protection against sun damage.

Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol at any cost as they cause dehydration. Instead opt for healthier drinks like cucumber and mint infused water, lemon water and green tea which can provide antioxidants and protect from the harsh heat waves.

What you must keep in mind when you are on the roads

Apply sunscreen: Applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is a must. Apply it generously to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, hands. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're sweating.

Wear weather appropriate clothes: Choose lightweight clothing preferably cotton that covers as much skin as possible. Opt for long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats or umbrellas to shield your face and neck from the sun.

Seek shade: Whenever possible, seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you're outdoors for an extended period, take regular breaks under a shade to provide your body some rest from direct sunlight.

Stay hydrated: Drink 3-4 litres of water throughout the day and add natural electrolyte like ORS or coconut water.

Be mindful of medications: Some medications can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if any medications you're taking could increase your risk of sunburn or other sun-related issues.

Seek help if you feel unwell and see a health care expert immediately.
