Can carrots actually give you a natural tan? Experts weigh in

TikTok's allure for beauty trends has led to claims like carrots inducing natural tans, yet experts remain skeptical due to the complex nature of tanning and the limited impact of beta-carotene

Can carrots actually give you a natural tan? Experts weigh in

In a world where beauty and wellness trends can spring up overnight, TikTok has become a breeding ground for viral challenges and hacks. One recent claim that's gained traction is the idea that consuming carrots can result in a natural tan. However, experts are skeptical about this notion and advise against relying on such unconventional methods for achieving a tan.

It is worth noting that carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a compound that the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, and immune function. It's true that consuming a diet rich in beta-carotene can give the skin a slightly warm and golden hue, especially in those with fair skin. However, the extent of this effect is often limited and varies from person to person.

According to experts, obtaining a natural tan is a complex process that involves the skin's response to UV radiation from the sun. The skin's melanin production increases as a defence mechanism against UV damage, leading to a darker skin tone. Carrots do not contain the type of melanin responsible for this tanning process, nor do they possess the ability to stimulate melanin production in the same way that UV exposure does.

Dermatologists and skin experts caution against relying solely on carrots or any other single food item for tanning purposes. Overexposure to UV radiation, whether from the sun or tanning beds, can lead to a host of negative health outcomes, including sunburn, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
