Air Pollution: 7 types of masks you can choose from during high level pollution

When it comes to protecting yourself from air pollution, especially in highly polluted areas like Delhi and Mumbai, choosing the right type of mask is essential.

Air Pollution: 7 types of masks you can choose from during high level pollution

Air pollution is a pressing concern in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, with dangerously high levels of pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). It's imperative for residents to wear masks to protect their respiratory health as these pollutants can lead to a range of health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and reduced overall well-being. Wearing masks can help mitigate exposure to these harmful airborne particles and is a crucial step in safeguarding public health in these urban areas.

Here are the masks you must choose during this grave situation:

N95 or N99 Respirators: These masks are highly efficient at filtering out fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and other pollutants. N95 masks block at least 95% of airborne particles, while N99 masks block at least 99%. They form a tight seal against the face and are recommended for individuals who are exposed to heavy pollution levels.

N100 Respirators: N100 masks are even more effective, filtering out 99.97% of particles. They provide the highest level of protection but can be more challenging to breathe through due to their high filtration efficiency.

P100 Respirators: These masks are similar to N100 respirators but are equipped with oil-resistant filters, making them suitable for environments with oil-based pollutants in addition to particulate matter.

FFP2 and FFP3 Masks: These European equivalent masks to N95 and N99, respectively, offer efficient filtration of fine particles. They are commonly used in many parts of the world.

Reusable Cloth Masks with Filters: High-quality reusable cloth masks with removable filters can be a more sustainable option. Look for masks that offer multi-layered, replaceable filters that can capture PM2.5 particles effectively.

Respirators with Valves: Some masks have exhalation valves that make breathing easier, but they may not be ideal for protecting others from your exhaled air. In situations where source control is important (e.g., COVID-19), masks without valves are preferred.

P95 Masks: P95 masks are oil-resistant and offer a good level of protection against both oil-based and non-oil-based airborne particles.
