AAP MP Raghav Chadha has undergone eye surgery vitrectomy as per reports, know what it is

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha recently flew to London for his eye surgery. According to reports, Chadha has gone through vitrectomy which is an eye surgery aimed at preventing retinal detachment in the eye.

What is vitrectomy?

This surgery is a surgical procedure that removes the vitreous humour, a gel-like substance that fills the eye between the lens and the retina. This surgery is essential for treating a variety of eye conditions, particularly those that affect the retina and the clarity of vision. The recovery from a vitrectomy varies depending on the individual’s health and the complexity of the surgery.

When should one get vitrectomy done?

Retinal detachment: When the retina detaches from the back of the eye, vitrectomy may be necessary to repair it.

Diabetic retinopathy: In advanced cases where blood vessels in the retina leak or become blocked, vitrectomy may be used to remove blood and scar tissue.

Macular hole: Vitrectomy can be performed to repair a macular hole, which is a small break in the macula, the central part of the retina.

Epiretinal membrane: Also known as macular pucker, this condition involves the formation of a thin layer of scar tissue on the surface of the retina, which can be removed through vitrectomy.

Precautions for vitrectomy surgery

Medical Evaluation: Ensure you have a thorough medical evaluation before the surgery to assess your overall health and any potential risks associated with anaesthesia or surgery.

Medication Review: Provide your surgeon with a list of all medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. Some medications may need to be adjusted or discontinued before surgery.

Fasting: Follow your surgeon's instructions regarding fasting before the surgery. Typically, you will need to refrain from eating or drinking anything for a certain period before the procedure to reduce the risk of complications during anaesthesia.

Eye Drops: Use any prescribed eye drops as directed by your doctor leading up to the surgery. These drops may help prepare your eye for the procedure and reduce the risk of infection.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: If you smoke or drink alcohol, try to abstain from these activities for a period before and after the surgery, as they can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.
