Making cheesy history: Indian cheese named one of the ‘world’s best’ for 2021

Dominated by the crème de la crème of the global cheese industry, the World Cheese Awards are like the Oscars for artisanal cheese. The contest-winning cheese varieties are often from the European region.

But thanks to Mumbai-based Eleftheria Cheese, a cheese developed in India has bagged a silver for the first time at the 2021 edition of the award show. Called Brunost, the award-winning cheese is also the first locally made brown cheese in India and took around two years of research and development. In terms of taste, Eleftheria’s founder told a leading daily that Brunost is reminiscent of a ‘peda’ with a mineral salinity.

Apart from selling directly through their website, Eleftheria supplies their artisanal cheese range, including the Brunost, to over 50 restaurants in major Indian cities and select Foodhall outlets.

As for the winner of the World Cheese Awards 2021, the accolade went to Olavadia, a type of creamy goat cheese from a Spanish creamery.
