FSSAI purity test: Here’s how to check for adulteration in Saffron

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is here to save you again with another purity test and this time it’s for the most expensive spice; Saffron.

As per FSSAI, Saffron can be adulterated with maize cob which may lead to bloating, gas and diarrhea. So, it is best to conduct an adulteration test before consumption.

Here’s how to detect adulteration in Saffron with hot water:

Take two glass jars with hot water up to 70-80 degrees. Now, add a few strands of saffron in both jars. The unadulterated saffron will release typical saffron colour slowly into the water. On the other hand, the adulterated saffron will immediately release red colour into the water.
