Should you use glycolic acid to combat smelly and sweaty underarms? Find out!

Here’s what a dermatologist has to say about switching out your deodorant for glycolic acid.

Should you use glycolic acid to combat smelly and sweaty underarms? Find out!

A trending topic on social media involves the use of glycolic acid as a deodorant, claiming to reduce excessive sweating and body odor. However, experts weigh in on its effectiveness.

While deodorants and antiperspirants target body odor and sweating, glycolic acid primarily serves for skincare purposes like exfoliation and texture enhancement. Some believe underarm exfoliation can reduce body odor, but experts caution that glycolic acid isn't a substitute for deodorant.

Applying glycolic acid directly to underarms can lead to redness, burning, itching, and irritation due to its potential harshness. Daily use can cause excessive exfoliation, weakening the skin's natural barrier and increasing susceptibility to irritation and infections. Dermatologists even warn of potential allergic reactions.

For those considering glycolic acid for exfoliation or hyperpigmentation reduction in the underarm area, experts advise opting for low-concentration products (5% or lower) to minimize the risk of irritation. Following glycolic acid application, using a fragrance-free moisturizer can soothe and hydrate the skin. A small patch test on the skin (excluding underarms) is recommended to check for adverse reactions before proceeding.
