After WFH, companies are adapting 'non-linear work day' culture. Know all about it

Have you ever imagined a life where you don’t have to wait for your day off to finish your pending personal chores and can finish them on a working day itself?

Well, a lot of modern workplaces are gradually adapting this way of working and giving leverage to their employees to work asynchronously on ‘non-linear working days’. This working style is another pandemic induced thing followed by work from home; changing the conventional idea of the nine-to-five routine.

Let us give you an example of how this works. Suppose you wake up early at 7 am and start working at 8 itself as you have a doctor’s appointment at 10 and have to visit the bank as well. You hand over your work to a team mate and leave and come back at about 3 pm and resume work until 7 or 8 pm.

The above example can however, be re-imagined according to how it would work for each individual. The basic idea behind this is to allow employees to finish their work in the time they are comfortable in, rather than forcing themselves to work during low productivity hours. It also helps them to take time out for physical activities and prepare meals. And its benefits for mental health cannot be denied.

Experts have found that non-linear working days provide better productivity and understanding between team mates. However, it depends on various situations in people’s lives which can be extremely subjective.

Also, organisations must have clear policies and guidelines for non-linear working days so that employees do not take advantage of the same. Managers and heads on the other hand must support a work culture which is judged on the basis of quality and not the quantity of the work done by the team.
