The liquid gold of drinks, turmeric milk is slowly getting the recognition it deserves!

Turmeric, which is the key ingredient in golden milk or haldi doodh, is often touted as an immunity booster to stave off illnesses. This bright yellow beverage is traditionally made by warming up some milk with raw or powdered turmeric and other ingredients such as honey, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and star anise.

Commonly known as haldi doodh in North Indian households, this beverage is increasingly gaining popularity in Western countries due to the range of health benefits it offers. The studies conducted by the National Institute of Health in the United States around this beverage have also helped widen its appeal.

Anti-bacterial properties

Turmeric and other common spices used to prepare the beverage have antibacterial and antiviral properties that protect the body from infections. Moreover, the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties strengthen the immune system. Thus, in India, golden milk is often used as a home remedy against common cold and flu.

Lowers blood sugar levels

Cinnamon and ginger, the other two primary ingredients in golden milk help in lowering blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. That said, the evidence is based on only a few studies, and more research is needed to confirm these observations.

Improves cognitive functions

Turmeric contains an active ingredient called curcumin which has many beneficial properties in itself. Studies show that curcumin may increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor. BDNF is a compound that helps the brain form new connections and promotes the growth of brain cells. Golden milk may thus be helpful in boosting memory strength.
