The UP government has approved the construction of multi-storey hospital buildings at KGMU and Queen Mary Hospital in Lucknow as part of a ₹198 crore healthcare infrastructure upgrade.

In its mission to deliver quality healthcare to every citizen, the UP government on Tuesday said it is accelerating the upgrade of medical infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh.

The Dental Faculty of King George's Medical University (KGMU) and the Apex Women Health Centre at Queen Mary Hospital in Lucknow are set to receive state-of-the-art multi-storey buildings as part of this initiative, it said.

The upcoming high-rise facilities will significantly enhance critical care, medicine, paediatrics and women's health services, it added.

"To carry out the project, the planning division under the Building Cell (Technical) of the Public Works Department (PWD) has prepared a detailed blueprint worth Rs 198 crore," the government said.

"All construction and development work will be executed on EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) mode within a period of two years. Upon completion, this initiative will pave the way for quality, future-ready healthcare services for patients," it said.

According to the proposal, two new multi-storey complexes will be built at KGMU -- a five-storey building for the Dental Faculty and five other departments, and a nine-storey Apex Women Health Centre.

The women's centre will house advanced facilities including a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), critical care, medicine and paediatrics. The new dental block will be constructed behind the existing faculty building within the KGMU campus, the government said.

According to an official statement, the five-storey dental complex will be systematically organised by department. The ground floor will house Oral Medicine and Radiology; the first floor will have Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics; the second floor, Public Health Dentistry; the third floor, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics; and the fourth floor, Oral Pathology and Microbiology.

Additional amenities will include a 200-seat multipurpose hall, parking facilities, a security room, a 2,000 sq ft administrative block and other support infrastructure, it added.

The government noted that the proposed Apex Women Health Centre at Queen Mary Hospital under KGMU is unique in many respects.

"It will be a nine-storey building above ground with three basement levels. The ground floor will be divided into lower (utility) and upper ground levels," it said.

"The first floor will house the obstetrics OPD, dedicated to high-risk patients. The second floor will be used for high-risk inpatient wards under obstetrics. The third floor will have a labour room, emergency operation theatre and post-operative complex," it said.

"The fourth floor will host a Maternal ICU under the Department of Critical Care and Medicine, while the fifth floor will house the NICU. The sixth floor will accommodate the Paediatrics CCM ICU.

"The seventh floor will be for Reproductive and Foetal Medicine, the eighth floor for Elective OT and the ninth floor will include faculty offices for departments such as Critical Care Medicine, Obstetrics and Neonatology," it added.

Additional infrastructure to be developed includes a public address system, CCTV surveillance, HVAC systems and modern elevators, the government said.
