The Opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday claimed the BJP leadership was the "mastermind" behind NCP leader Sunetra Pawar taking oath as Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, just days after her husband Ajit Pawar's demise.
An editorial in the Sena (UBT) mouthpiece 'Saamana' also alleged that the BJP leadership and Nationalist Congress Party leaders Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel do not want the unification of the two NCP factions.
Sunetra Pawar took oath as the state's first woman deputy CM on Saturday, barely three days after NCP leader Ajit Pawar and four others died in an air crash at Baramati in Pune district, inviting criticism from some quarters over the pace at which the development took place.
Rival NCP (SP) chief and Ajit Pawar's uncle Sharad Pawar on Saturday claimed that he had &ldquo;no idea&rdquo; about her swearing-in.
The 'Saamana' editorial said the question before Maharashtra is on whose wish did Sunetra Pawar take oath as deputy CM because neither NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar nor its working president Supriya Sule, nor members of the Pawar family were aware of this. Sunetra Pawar did not even give the slightest hint that she was leaving for Mumbai from Baramati to take oath as deputy CM, it said.
"The BJP leadership is the mastermind behind this politics," the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed.
"The complications have increased in the Pawar family and Maharashtra politics after the death of Ajit Pawar. Many desire that these issues do not get sorted out," it added.
After Ajit Pawar's death, some in the NCP became more ambitious and there was a race to take charge as the deputy CM within the party. There are differences between Patel and Tatkare. Sunetra Pawar was "installed" as deputy CM because the party of "Patil-Pawar" should not go to Patel, the editorial claimed.
Sunetra Pawar was made to steer the ship, but its engine and control are with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Both Sunetra Pawar and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena can maintain their existence at the mercy of Fadnavis, it charged.
The editorial further said Sunetra Pawar's deputy CM post should not be a mere ornamental. She may probably not be "gungi gudiya" (mute doll) and work effectively, it opined.
The NCP is an alliance with the "sanatani-minded" BJP, and Sunetra Pawar taking oath even before the completion of her husband's post-last rites rituals does not fit into the Hindutva beliefs, it claimed.

At least 10 people were arrested in the clash that broke out in south Kolkata's Golpark area under the Rabindra Sarobar Police Station limits on Sunday night, a senior officer said.
"The situation is now under control. Ten people were arrested early on Monday, and raids are underway to arrest others involved in the clash," he said.
The violence broke out on Kankulia Road around 8.30 pm on Sunday when a group of youths from another area entered the locality and were confronted by locals, he said, adding that "two persons were injured in the incident".
Stones were hurled from both sides, creating panic in the area, the policeman said.
"Crude bombs were thrown, and at least one round of bullets was fired during the clash. Empty cartridges and splinters have been recovered from the area," the officer said.
A mob later vandalised several motorcycles and made attempts to attack a police vehicle when security personnel arrived at the spot to disperse the crowd, he said.
A large police force was deployed to bring the situation under control, the officer said.
"CCTV footage from the area is being scrutinised to identify the miscreants," he said.
Locals alleged that the violence was aimed at asserting control over the locality.
A local Trinamool Congress leader visited the area and said, "Strict action will be taken against those responsible for creating panic and disturbing public order."
The investigation is underway, the police officer said.

As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Sameer app, AQI data for three stations was not immediately available. Lodhi Road recorded an AQI of 116, the lowest amongst all the stations.
According to the CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'. Delhi's air quality is likely to settle in the 'poor' category for the next two days.
The outlook for the subsequent six days also states that the air quality is likely to be in the 'poor' band, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS).
The IMD said Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, while Palam saw a marginally higher minimum of 10.7 degrees Celsius. Other parts of the city, including Lodhi Road and Ridge, reported minimum temperatures between 11 and 11.4 degrees Celsius.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to range between 17 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The government on Sunday raised the limit for passengers bringing duty-free imported goods into India from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000.
Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, notified on Sunday, a resident or a tourist of Indian origin arriving in India other than by land shall be allowed duty-free clearance of articles up to Rs 75,000, if such articles are carried on the person or in the bona fide accompanied baggage of the passenger.
The new Baggage Rules, 2026, come into effect from midnight on February 2 and replace a decade-old baggage rule.
A tourist of foreign origin, not being an infant, arriving in India shall be allowed duty-free clearance of articles up to the value of Rs 25,000. This limit was Rs 15,000 under the Baggage Rules, 2016.
In the case of a resident or tourist of Indian origin residing abroad for more than one year, on return to India, duty-free clearance of jewellery will be allowed up to a weight of 40 grams if brought by a female passenger. The limit will be 20 grams if brought by anyone other than a female passenger in bona fide baggage.
For the purpose of this rule, jewellery means articles of adornment ordinarily worn by a person, made of gold, silver, platinum, or other precious metals, whether studded or not.

The MLA said that in the upcoming elections for the Taluka Panchayat, District Panchayat, and municipalities, AAP would contest independently and unitedly. He expressed faith that residents of Kukarmunda, Nizar, and surrounding areas would support AAP candidates and work toward ensuring their victory.

During a press conference, Pravin Ram addressed the media, saying that the BJP had kept them in jail for 108 days to suppress the voice of farmers. He said that many other innocent farmers were also detained and that despite this, they had emerged stronger.
&ldquo;We stayed in jail not broken but stronger. This is a clear message that the fight for farmers will not stop,&rdquo; he said, adding that he would continue working on farmers&rsquo; issues, including the Ghed region.
Pravin Ram claimed that a conspiracy took place in Botad, where 100 people were booked, yet police did not have evidence of them committing violence. He said police focused on party positions rather than actions, suggesting that legal action was used to curb the protests. He stated that the public would respond to this in the upcoming Taluka Panchayat and District Panchayat elections. He also described incidents in Haddad village where farmers ensured that escalation was avoided, though arrests and alleged violence occurred later.
Pravin Ram welcomed the government circular banning the Kadada practice as a major victory for farmers, but emphasized that the implementation remains a challenge. He said many traders are still exploiting farmers and that enforcing the circular on the ground is necessary.
Isudan Gadhvi stated that after taking control of APMCs, the BJP introduced the price-cutting practice, which he said exploited farmers. He said that when AAP farmer leaders raised their voices, the government issued the circular banning Kadada practices. Gadhvi alleged that police acted harshly during protests in Haddad village, targeting AAP leaders and farmers, and described the actions as severe. He said the movement for farmers&rsquo; rights would continue and that agitations would be carried out on multiple issues.
Ramesh Mer addressed the media, stating that farmers were treated harshly, similar to being treated like terrorists, even though they were protesting only against the price-cutting practice. He questioned why officers did not act similarly against traders accused of exploiting farmers.&nbsp;
Mer also mentioned that farmers endured hardships, including lack of food, water, and medical assistance, yet remained committed to ensuring that their demands are met.

Addressing the media, Gadhvi said the budget does not offer adequate relief to the middle class, which he said continues to bear a high tax burden and faces multiple GST slabs. He added that despite rising medical expenses, no significant provisions have been made to ease healthcare costs.
&ldquo;Many families spend a large part of their income on hospital treatment, yet there is no clear arrangement for healthcare relief,&rdquo; he said. He also stated that the budget does not include major initiatives related to education.
Commenting on the agricultural sector, Gadhvi said that farmers have not been provided sufficient support. He claimed that the budget does not reflect clear plans for irrigation facilities, free electricity or loan relief. According to him, farmers are unlikely to benefit significantly from the current proposals.
Raising the issue of employment, the AAP leader said that regular government recruitment has declined in recent years. He alleged that outsourcing has increased while permanent recruitment has reduced, and pointed to fewer job openings in sectors such as the railways. He also said there is no clarity regarding a recruitment calendar.
Gadhvi further stated that the budget does not outline specific schemes for economically weaker and marginalised communities. Referring to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), he noted that while workdays have reportedly been increased from 100 to 125, states have been assigned a higher financial burden.
He questioned how state governments would manage the additional responsibility and said there was no clear roadmap for implementation.
Calling the budget disappointing, Gadhvi said it does not adequately address the needs of farmers, the middle class, youth, and vulnerable sections of society. He added that, in his view, the budget lacks a comprehensive approach to economic and social development.
The Central Government, meanwhile, has maintained that the budget focuses on growth, infrastructure development, and long-term economic stability. Officials have said the proposals aim to balance fiscal discipline with welfare and development priorities.

Gunshots were fired at filmmaker Rohit Shetty's residence in Mumbai on Sunday, leading to the detention of five persons in Pune, with the preliminary probe pointing at their links with Lawrence Bishnoi gang member Shubham Lonkar, an accused in the Baba Siddique murder case.
At least five rounds were fired at the first floor of the nine-storey building in Juhu area at around 12.45 am. One bullet struck the glass of a gym located in the building, officials said.
Nobody was injured, and it was not known whether the filmmaker was at his residence in the Juhu area when the incident occurred in the wee hours, a Mumbai Police officer said.
Security outside Shetty's building was stepped up following the firing, he said.
"Zonal police and crime branch teams are investigating,&rdquo; he said, adding that Juhu Police and crime branch teams rushed to the spot and launched the investigation.
The police examined CCTV footage from around the building to establish the sequence of events.
Forensic science and ballistic experts&rsquo; teams also reached the spot to collect evidence, the official said.
A case was registered on charges of attempt to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the provisions of the Arms Act.
Sambhaji Kadam, DCP (Zone 3) of Pune Police, said the five men were detained by personnel from the Warje Malwadi police station.
The detained suspects were identified as Aman Marote (27) and Aditya Gayaki (19), both residents of Karve Nagar; Siddharth Yenpure (20), Samarth Pomaji (18), and Swapnil Sakat (23), residents of Dhayari.
Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi said the suspects have been handed over to the Mumbai Police.
According to police, the detained suspects have links with Shubham Lonkar, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, who is an accused in the NCP leader Baba Siddique murder case.
Shetty is best known for the &ldquo;Golmaal&rdquo; and &ldquo;Singham&rdquo; franchises led by Ajay Devgn and for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer &ldquo;Chennai Express&rdquo;.
Siddique (66) was shot at by three persons at Kher Nagar in Mumbai&rsquo;s Bandra area just outside his son Zeeshan Siddique&rsquo;s office on the night of October 12, 2024. He was declared dead at a hospital the same night.

India has not allocated funds for the Chabahar port project in Iran in the Union Budget for 2026-27 and has halved the development assistance for Bangladesh to Rs 60 crore, reflecting frosty bilateral ties.
Bhutan has been allocated the largest share -- Rs 2,288 crore -- as development aid, followed by Rs 800 crore to Nepal and Rs 550 crore each to the Maldives and Mauritius.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been given a total of Rs 22,118 crore as against the current fiscal's budget estimate of Rs 20,516 crore and revised estimate of Rs 21,742 crore.
For the next fiscal, the allocation for Bangladesh has been pegged at Rs 60 crore. While the budget allocation to Bangladesh for 2025-26 was Rs 120 crore, the revised estimate put the amount at Rs 34.48 crore.
In a departure from the last few years, no allocation has been made for the Chabahar port project. In last year&rsquo;s budget, Rs 100 crore was set aside for the port project, which was increased to Rs 400 crore in the revised estimate.
India has been making an annual outlay of Rs 100 crore to the mega connectivity project in Iran&rsquo;s Sistan-Balochistan province over the last several years.
In September last year, the US imposed economic sanctions on Iran but granted India a six-month exemption for the Chabahar port project. The waiver will end on April 26.
The Chabahar port is being developed by India and Iran to boost connectivity and trade ties and to serve as a key part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The total overseas development partnership portfolio for 2025-26 under the MEA has been pegged at Rs 6,997 crore, which is over 31 per cent of the ministry&rsquo;s total allocation.
Out of this amount, Rs 4,548 crore has been earmarked for immediate neighbours. The funds will support projects ranging from large infrastructure works to community-level development initiatives.
According to revised estimates for 2025-26, Bhutan was allocated Rs 1,950 crore.
In continuation of India&rsquo;s special relationship with Afghanistan, an allocation of Rs 150 crore has been made for 2026-27, compared to Rs 100 crore in 2025-26.
Sri Lanka has been allocated Rs 400 crore, while Myanmar will receive Rs 300 crore.
The total assistance for Latin American countries in the 2026-27 budget has been pegged at Rs 120 crore.

The BJP leader claimed that the president's address during the UPA tenure lacked mention of the country's cultural ethos and heritage.
As some Congress members protested, Home Minister Amit Shah intervened, saying Surya was only referring to the content of the president's address and not to any particular leader.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Motion of Thanks, which Surya seconded.
The President addresses the joint sitting of the two Houses at the beginning of the first session of the year.
President Droupadi Murmu delivered her address on January 28, marking the beginning of the Budget Session.
Surya said that despite the global slowdown, India remained one of the fastest-growing economies, with youth being empowered as torchbearers of the country's future.
"We have delivered the most honest government," he said.

Once operational, it will become Uttar Pradesh's fifth international airport.
The Noida International Airport is a greenfield project being developed in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar district under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday embarked on a three-day visit to the US to attend a Washington-led ministerial meeting on critical minerals supply chain.
Jaishankar's visit assumes significance as it is being seen as an opportunity to address the sharp downturn in the relations between the two strategic partners. It is expected that the minister will hold bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials of the Trump administration.
"External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the United States from February 2 to 5 to participate in the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio," the external affairs ministry said in a statement.
It said the ministerial will focus on supply chain resilience, clean energy transitions, and strategic cooperation in critical minerals.
"During the visit, the external affairs minister will also hold meetings with senior members of the US administration," it said.
India-US ties have been reeling under severe stress after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duties, for India's purchase of Russian crude oil.
Apart from the tariff issue, the relations witnessed a downturn on a number of other issues that included Trump's claim of ending the India-Pakistan conflict in May last year and Washington's new immigration policy.

The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to three accused in the 2024 Pune Porsche accident case that claimed two lives, while observing that parents are to be blamed for such incidents involving juveniles.
A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan observed that parents are not able to control their children. &ldquo;Substance abuse is another thing but giving them (children) car keys and funds to have a gala time is unacceptable,&rdquo; the court observed.
On January 23, the top court sought a response from the Maharashtra government on a plea filed by accused Amar Santish Gaikwad seeking bail in the case.
Gaikwad, represented by advocate Sana Raees Khan, was alleged to be a middleman who gave Rs 3 lakh to the assistant of a doctor in a hospital to replace a blood sample of the juvenile accused.

The high court on December 16 last year rejected the bail pleas of eight accused, including Gaikwad, Sood and Mittal, in the case.
The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) had granted bail to the minor accused on lenient terms, sparking nationwide outrage. The bail conditions included writing a 300-word essay on road safety.
Following public outrage, the Pune police approached the JJB to review its decision. The board later modified the order and sent the juvenile to an observation home. In June, the high court ordered the release of the juvenile.
While the juvenile involved in the case was released from the observation home, 10 accused, including his parents Vishal Agarwal and Shivani Agarwal, doctors Ajay Tawre and Shreehari Halnor, Sassoon Hospital staffer Atul Ghatkamble, Aditya Avinash Sood, Ashish Mittal and Arun Kumar Singh, and two middlemen, were sent to jail in the blood sample swapping case.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 hit the Kashmir Valley early on Monday, causing panic among the people in Pattan and surrounding areas of Baramulla district, officials said.&nbsp;

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at 5.35 am at a depth of 10 km with the epicentre in Pattan area, which is 10 km northeast of Gulmarg, a tourist resort.&nbsp;
Earlier, the magnitude was the earthquake was said to be 4.6 but it was later reviewed to 4.7. Tremors lasted nearly 20 seconds.&nbsp;
