Mother and Daughter from Tamil Nadu Excel in NEET Exam Inspires Many

Chennai, Jul 31 (PTI) — In an inspiring tale of determination and coincidental triumph, a 49-year-old physiotherapist and her daughter from Tamil Nadu successfully cleared the NEET exam. While the mother has secured admission to a government medical college close to her home district, her daughter is set to embark on her own medical journey.

Amuthavalli Manivannan found the syllabus challenging and vastly different from her school days. However, motivated by her daughter's diligent preparation for the national-level exam, she began her own preparation.

"My ambition was reignited after watching my daughter prepare for NEET. She was my greatest inspiration. I borrowed her books and studied for the exam," a jubilant Amuthavalli shared.

M Samyuktha, a CBSE student, attended a coaching class, and the same study materials that aided her success also helped her mother.

"It was easier for me to memorize when I could explain what I had studied to someone. My father, a lawyer by profession, wasn't keen on medicine. But my mother, with her medical background, was attentive," she said.

On July 30, during the counseling session for Tamil Nadu medical admissions, Amuthavalli, accompanied by her daughter, participated under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) category. She chose to join the government medical college in Virudhunagar, near her native Tenkasi, scoring 147 marks in NEET.

Amuthavalli recalled her earlier attempt to secure an MBBS seat after her schooling three decades ago, which did not materialize, leading her to pursue physiotherapy instead.

Speaking to reporters, Samyuktha said, "I don’t want to study at the same college as my mother. I hope to compete in the general quota and study elsewhere, perhaps outside the state." She scored 450 marks in NEET and can also compete in the SC quota, her mother mentioned.

"My husband has been extremely supportive. He encouraged both of us to prepare for NEET," Amuthavalli added.

The selection committee under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research conducted offline counseling on July 30 for the 7.5 percent reservation for government school students, special categories, PwD, children of ex-servicemen, and eminent sports personalities.
