According to officials, the incident occurred on April 13 when Kehr Singh's body was found hanging in a rented room with the door locked from inside.
Initially, it was suspected to be a case of suicide. However, the post-mortem report said he died due to strangulation, they said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, "The post-mortem report clearly indicates death by strangulation, though the closed room suggested a suicide. We are investigating all possible angles and have taken both named accused -- Rekha and her lover Pintu (25) -- into custody." The couple was sent to jail after a medical examination on Friday.
Singh was working as a sanitation worker posted on contract with the Fatehganj Paschimi Nagar Panchayat in Bareilly.
Mishra said, "Suspecting poisoning, we have also preserved the victim's viscera for forensic testing. During questioning, Rekha initially avoided direct answers but later confessed to mixing poison in her husband's food. However, she denied strangling him or hanging the body, claiming her husband might have locked the room and taken his own life." Police said they are awaiting the viscera report to confirm the poisoning.
Meanwhile, a case of murder has been registered against Rekha and Pintu at the Fatehganj Paschimi police station based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Ashok.
In his complaint, Ashok alleged that his brother had learned about his wife's affair with Pintu. Following this, they conspired to kill his brother.
"They first gave him poison. When he became unconscious, they strangled him with a rope and then used the same rope to hang his body from the ceiling to make it look like suicide," the FIR stated.
The investigation is ongoing, and further action will depend on the forensic findings and statement corroboration, police said.

According to the chart he shared, Independents have secured 15 Anchalik Parishad seats uncontested, the Congress nine and the AIUDF one seat.
"This is a massive and unprecedented mandate in Assam's political history. It reflects the immense trust and overwhelming love that the people of Assam have for the NDA and for our Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji," Sarma said.
"We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive. The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam," he said.
An official of the State Election Commission said the tally of uncontested seats will be issued on Saturday.
Counting of votes for the panchayat elections will be held on May 11.
There are a total of 21,920 seats in the Gram Panchayats, 2,192 seats in the Anchalik Parishads and 397 in the Zilla Parishads.
Of the 34 districts in the state, panchayat polls are being held in 27 as the remaining seven are governed by autonomous councils.
A total of 1.80 crore people are eligible to vote in the panchayat polls.

As part of the initiative, a copy of the contract letter has been sent to these hospitals to enter into an agreement with the Delhi government.
Along with this, the guidelines for implementation have also been shared with all the associated hospitals.
The source said the hospitals have been asked to sign the agreement as soon as possible so that the beneficiaries of Ayushman Yojana do not face any problems in availing healthcare services.
The BJP-led Delhi government inked an MoU with the Centre on April 5 to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the city.
With this, Delhi has become the 35th state/Union Territory to implement the health insurance scheme.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides free and cashless treatment for 1,961 medical procedures across 27 specialties, covering the costs of medicines, diagnostic services, hospitalisation, ICU care, surgeries and more.
Under the scheme, eligible families in Delhi will receive annual health coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh -- Rs 5 lakh from the Centre and an additional Rs 5 lakh as a top-up from the Delhi government.
The BJP, which came to power in Delhi in February after a gap of more than 26 years, approved the implementation of the scheme at its first cabinet meeting held right after Gupta and six of her ministers took the oath of office on February 20.

Addressing a press conference, he hit out at the ruling BJP and said the party wants to turn Maharashtra into a desert.
"Never ever has the city (Mumbai) witnessed a water crisis in March and April which is being experienced this year. Temperatures are rising across the state, crossing over 40 degrees Celsius in March and April," Thackeray said, and attributed it to climate change.
"The State Wildlife Board has given approval to projects which will lead to felling of lakhs of trees. Permission has been given to cut five lakh trees in Thane and Palghar district for constructing Gargai dam to address water woes of Mumbai...The BJP wants to make Maharashtra a desert," the former state environment minister said.
If the need arises, the Sena (UBT) will approach the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Bhupender Yadav) as well as the country's President to oppose the project, he added.
The Gargai dam project had been scrapped when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was in power (from 2019 to 2022) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had decided to build a desalination plant which could have been completed much before the dam, required minimal space and could would have been very cost-effective, the Sena (UBT) leader said.
However, the desalination project was scrapped by the previous Eknath Shinde-led government. The plant would have generated 450 MLD water, which could have been increased to 600 MLD.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday gave a nod for the grant of wildlife and environmental clearances for the Gargai dam project in neighbouring Palghar district that will supply water to Mumbai.
The decision was taken at the 24th meeting of the Maharashtra State Wildlife Board, chaired by Fadnavis and attended by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik and senior officials.
The Gargai project is important for Mumbai's water requirements in view of growing population. With the approval for the 844.8 hectares land diversion proposal, additional drinking water will be available for Mumbaikars, Fadnavis said.
At present, seven lakes/reservoirs provide water to the country's financial capital.
Thackeray further said, "Instead of reducing the monsoon dependency of Mumbai city, the BMC is cutting trees and making the city more dependent on rains." Apart from this, 1.5 lakh trees will be cut for a mining project in Gadchiroli, he alleged.
"Trees will also be cut for the Marki Mangli (mining project)," Thackeray said, adding that the project had not been approved by the MVA government during his tenure as environment minister.
The Worli MLA also claimed that 60,000 trees will be cut for the Coastal Road's north-bound extension.
The wildlife board should have looked into it more responsibly, he said.

The district Trinamool Congress leadership is "unhappy" with the Baharampur MP for not visiting Murshidabad during last week's communal clashes, with a section of the unit expressing displeasure over the party's decision to field a celebrity candidate who was absent during the crisis and has perceived disconnect from grassroots workers, TMC sources said.
"He is a cricketer and a celebrity. Why would he come here? We are the ones trying to manage the situation on the ground. This is the issue with nominating celebrities. He is in touch with us over the phone, and we have asked him to come to the district. But right now, he is busy with the IPL," Murshidabad MP and senior TMC leader Abu Taher Khan told PTI.
Pathan, a former Indian cricketer and first-time MP, had defeated five-time Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Baharampur in last year's Lok Sabha elections, ending the Congress' decades-long stronghold in the constituency.
Another senior leader of the party, who did not wish to be named, said the TMC top brass is "not pleased" with Pathan, especially after he posted photos on social media, which were seen as "insensitive" in the present context.
"Although the violence-hit areas do not fall under his constituency, he should have at least paid a visit to the district. The leadership is looking into it," the TMC leader said.
Three people were killed in communal clashes that broke out in Shamsherganj, Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur areas of Murshidabad district last week. These locations are around 80 km from Baharampur, the constituency represented by Pathan.
The BJP seized on the opportunity to criticise the ruling party.
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, "Bengal is burning under the indulgence of TMC leaders. But TMC MP Yusuf Pathan is busy sipping tea as Hindus get slaughtered. This is the true face of the TMC." The violence erupted during protests against recent amendments to the Waqf Act brought by the central government. Murshidabad is a Muslim-majority district.
Out of the violence-hit areas, Samserganj and Dhulian fall under the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha seat, represented by Congress MP Isha Khan Choudhury, while Suti is part of the Jangipur seat, held by TMC's Khalilur Rahaman.
The third MP from the district is TMC's Abu Taher Khan, who represents the Murshidabad seat.

Vivek Aggarwal, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Culture.
Aggarwal is currently Additional Secretary in the Department of Revenue. He is also holding the charge of Director, Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND).
Other senior officers have been appointed to key central government departments as part of the bureaucratic rejig.

Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal slammed Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday for questioning the judiciary over the timeline for the president to take decisions, saying this is "unconstitutional" and he had never seen any Rajya Sabha chairman make "political statements" of this nature.
A day after Dhankhar used strong words against the judiciary, Sibal asserted that the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman remain equidistant between the opposition and the ruling party, and cannot be the "spokesperson of the party".
"Everyone knows that the Lok Sabha Speaker's chair is in between. He or she is the Speaker of the House, not the speaker of one party. They also don't vote, they only vote when there is a tie. The same is with the upper house. You are equidistant between the opposition and the ruling party," the senior advocate said at a press conference here.
"Everything you say must be equidistant. No speaker can be the spokesperson of a party. I don't say that he (Dhankhar) is but no Speaker in principle can be the spokesperson of any party. If it appears so then the dignity of the chair is lowered," Sibal asserted.
Dhankhar on Thursday questioned the judiciary setting a timeline for the president to take decisions and act as a "super Parliament", saying the Supreme Court cannot fire a "nuclear missile" at democratic forces.
Dhankhar's strong words to the judiciary came during his speech to Rajya Sabha interns, days after the Supreme Court sought to fix a timeline for the president to grant assent to the bills reserved for her consideration by the governor.
"So, we have judges who will legislate, who will perform executive functions, who will act as super Parliament and absolutely have no accountability because the law of the land does not apply to them," Dhankhar said.
He also described Article 142, which grants plenary powers to the Supreme Court, as a "nuclear missile against democratic forces available to the judiciary 24x7".
Slamming Dhankhar for his remarks, Sibal said, "If you give such statements it will look as if judiciary is being taught a lesson. It Is not neutral and not constitutional." The judiciary should not be attacked in this manner by the executive, especially two ministers - Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju - and the chairman of the house, as the judiciary cannot defend itself.
"Then the polity must defend the judiciary. Independence of the judiciary is fundamental to democracy in the country. What is being done is unconstitutional," he said.
"I have never seen any chairman of the House make political statements of this nature. Even BJP chairman in the past (have not done so)," Sibal said, hitting out at Dhankhar.
Sibal said he was saddened and surprised by the statement of Dhankhar.
"Judicial institutions - high courts or Supreme Courts, if there is faith in any institution, it is the judiciary. I feel that when government people do not like the decisions of the judiciary then the start accusing that it (judiciary) has gone beyond its limit. When they like it and the opposition says something then they say it is the decision of the Supreme Court," the former Congress leader said.
When someone raises questions about Article 370 or Ramjanam bhoomi judgement, the government people point out that it is a Supreme Court decision, he said.
"When (Justice J B) Pardiwala judgement came they say how can the Supreme Court say this. The judgement which you do not like is wrong and which is as per your thinking, it is fine. It is not right for a constitutional functionary to say such a thing," Sibal said referring to Dhakhar's remarks.
"I respect him a lot but you said article 142 is nuclear missile material, how can you say this? Article 142 has given powers to the Supreme Court and it is given by the Constitution, it is not by the government it is the Constitution to do complete justice," Sibal said.
He also pointed out that the President of India is a titular head and acts on the aid and advice of the council of ministers.
"The governor acts on the aid and advice of the council of ministers in a state. So when a bill is passed it goes to the governor, the governor can make comments and send it back but if passed again, the governor has to give an assent as stated in the Constitution. The governor can send the bill to the president. President acts on the aid and advice of the ministers, so the matter goes to the Centre. The president does not have personal powers," he said.
Dhankar said how can president's power be curtailed, Sibal noted and wondered who is curtailing the power of the President.
Can the governor sit for two years on a bill that is important for people, Sibal asked and added that this amounts to an intrusion on the supremacy of the legislature.
"If you have a problem with a judgement, call for a review. If there are still problems, take an advisory opinion from Supreme Court," Sibal said.
"He (Dhankhar) talked about 1984 but did not talk about 2002. You talked about an emergency bit not undeclared emergency that is going on, you did not talk about capture of institutions," Sibal said in a scathing criticism of Dhankhar's comments.
He said it seems that he only talks about what happened in Congress governments and not after 2014.
"We moved an impeachment motion against judge of a high court in December; it was signed by more than 50 members. We are in April, it took five months to find out whether those signatures are genuine or not. How many more months would it take?" Sibal said.
"If you do not with expedition decide the matter then the argument for us is that we cannot do anything. If the governor doesn't not clear bills, the judiciary cannot do anything," he said.
If the executive doesn't do its job the judiciary has to intervene, Sibal asserted.
Article 142 of the Constitution gives the Supreme Court the power to issue orders that ensure "complete justice" in any matter before it.
Sibal also hit out at Dhankhar for his remarks questioning the lack of an FIR in the discovery of wads of burnt cash from the residence of a high court judge.
"You will tell me when FIR will be done. There is a judgement on that also that the CJI will decide. You cannot interfere in the work of courts nor can the courts interfere in your work," the Independent Rajya Sabha member said.
Sibal also recalled the 1975 Supreme Court judgment that invalidated then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's election.
"People would remember that when the Supreme Court's decision came regarding the election of Indira Gandhi, only one judge - Justice Krishna Iyer - gave the decision," he said. "That was acceptable to Dhankhar ji, but now a two-judge bench ruling is not right because it is not in favour of the government," he said.

During his visit, Gond reportedly noticed that while his supporters were greeting him, the hospital's medical superintendent, Ravi Pratap Singh, stood silently in the background wearing a face mask.
"I couldn't recognise who the doctor was. Later at the inauguration site, the doctor approached me and said, 'minister sir, you didn't meet me'. I told him it was his duty to step forward and greet me as per the protocol," Gond told reporters.
Gond also alleged that locals and party workers had complained to him that the official was frequently found under the influence of alcohol while on duty.
"Action will be taken against such a doctor," he said.
Confirming that the minister called him on Wednesday, chief medical officer Ashwini Kumar said, "That's when I learnt that the superintendent of Dibulganj hospital did not follow protocol. I have ordered an inquiry into the matter by a senior official. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against the guilty."

"The anger among the people of the area is quite natural," Tiwari said in an X post, adding, "I have been in touch with senior police officers from the district since last night. Most of the criminals have been identified and a thorough investigation is underway." Tiwari also appealed for calm. "Efforts should be made to ensure that police action is not hindered," he said.
BJP MLA Ravinder Singh Negi said, "We have assured the family that there is no need to panic or leave the area. Strict action will be taken against the accused. Police are doing their job, the culprits will be punished." "In Hindustan, Hindus will stay. No one needs to leave their homes. We have removed the posters and assured people that we are standing with them," he said.
"If there is a need for the Yogi model, it will be used. If an encounter is required, the police will act accordingly. If any accused tries to flee, we will respond with the Yogi model," he added.
Meanwhile, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "For the past six to eight months, we have been warning that law and order in Delhi has collapsed. No new police recruitment is taking place, and the force is busy with VIP duties...

He, however, stressed that both parties will remain part of the INDIA bloc at the national level despite Congress' stance in Gujarat.
Gohil hinted that the AAP failed to fulfil the "gathbandhan dharma" by declaring its candidate for the Visavadar seat despite being part of the INDIA bloc.
While the Election Commission is yet to announce dates for the bypolls, the AAP last month declared party leader Gopal Italia as its candidate for the Visavadar seat.
Gohil said, "A detailed discussion was held about the upcoming bypolls in our political affairs committee meeting. Every alliance has some principles. The AAP has already declared its candidate for Visavadar without consulting us. We are part of the INDIA bloc. But, state party units are free to make their own decisions." The Congress leader claimed the party lost the Haryana assembly polls because the AAP had refused to accept its offer on some seats and decided to field its candidates.
He pointed out that the Congress had vacated the Bharuch and Bhavnagar seats for the AAP during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
"Hence, we have unanimously decided to go solo in the upcoming bypolls. It is also a fact that Gujarat voters never accepted a third force. Despite the damage caused by the AAP, the Congress is still the largest opposition party here. In people's interest, Congress will field its candidates on these seats," Gohil said.
The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023 when the then AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Kadi seat in Mehsana, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been vacant since February 4 after the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki.
