Saket Court Enhances Security with Integrated Equipment Installation

New security installations are underway at Saket court complex with closures of Gates 1 and 2. This follows alarming safety incidents and adheres to High Court directives.

Saket Court Enhances Security with Integrated Equipment Installation

New Delhi, June 25 (PTI) — The principal district and sessions judge for south Delhi has announced the installation of "integrated security equipment" at the entrances of the Saket district court complex.

In a circular dated June 23, the judge noted, "In compliance with the Delhi High Court's instructions from the order dated November 24, 2021, which aim to strengthen security at all district courts, the installation work of integrated security equipment is set to begin at Gates 1, 2, and 6, commencing on June 13, and is expected to be completed during the upcoming summer vacation."

The circular also stated that installation at Gates 1 and 2 would start on June 24, necessitating a complete closure of these gates until June 30.

"During this period, Gates 1 and 2 will not be available for pedestrian or vehicular entry for judicial officers, advocates, and staff," the circular mentioned.

Gate 6 will serve as the main access point for advocates and others, in addition to providing vehicle entry for judicial officers from the basement parking area.

Narendra Sharma, vice president of the Saket Court Bar Association, indicated that the enhanced security system for vehicle entry at Gates 1 and 2 includes hydraulic bollard barriers, radio-frequency identification, and scanners.

"These steps will bolster the existing security measures for vehicle entry. Boom barriers and security cameras are already installed at the entrance gates. Additionally, security enhancements are anticipated at Gate 4, which is designated for litigants and others,” Sharma said.

Dhir Singh Kasana, a former secretary of the association, mentioned that the complete security system details would emerge following the opening of the magistrate’s court in the complex on June 26.

On April 21, 2023, a concerning incident occurred when a 49-year-old debarred lawyer opened fire in the court complex, injuring a woman and stirring panic which underscored significant concerns regarding the security in well-guarded courts across the capital.

Additionally, a tragic event unfolded on June 5, when an undertrial prisoner was killed inside the lockup at the same court complex, allegedly by two other inmates due to a longstanding feud.

The Delhi High Court’s directives from November 2021 dictate that various security measures, such as security audits, vehicle checks upon entry, and the installation of CCTV cameras, are essential to ensure safety within district court premises.
