Twenty people were burnt alive and 16 were critically injured in Rajasthan when a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur suddenly went up in flames on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C P Radhakrishnan condoled the loss of lives in the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
Rajasthan Police said the bus, carrying 57 passengers, left Jaisalmer around 3 pm. While it was traversing the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway, smoke began emanating from the vehicle's rear portion.
Noticing it, the driver stopped the bus, but it got engulfed in flames within moments.
Locals and passers-by rushed to the spot and assisted in the rescue efforts. Army personnel also assisted in the operation. Fire tenders and police were informed, and the injured passengers were taken to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer for treatment.
Police said 16 critically injured passengers have been referred to a hospital in Jodhpur.
BJP MLA from Pokaran Pratap Puri informed PTI that 20 passengers have died in the bus fire. "Nineteen passengers died in the bus and one succumbed to burn injuries on the way to Jodhpur," he said.
The legislator said the bus caught fire 10 minutes after leaving Jaisalmer.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma reached Jaisalmer and was briefed by the officers.
The chief minister said officials have been instructed to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and all possible assistance to the affected people.
"The incident of a bus catching fire in Jaisalmer is extremely heart-wrenching. I express deep condolences to those affected by this tragic accident. Directions have been given to officials concerned for the proper treatment of the injured and to extend every possible help to the victims," he posted on X.
Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Modi took to X to say, "Distressed by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured." "An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000," he said.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured." Following the accident, the district administration issued an appeal for information to ascertain the identity of the deceased. The bodies will be handed over to family members after DNA matching, officials said.
The Jaisalmer district administration said it promptly began relief and rescue operations after receiving information about the incident. District Collector Pratap Singh directed officials to ensure immediate medical care for the injured. Helpline numbers were also issued.

Officials said on Wednesday that the tanker driver was burnt alive in the incident and one man was injured.
The explosions and flames were visible and audible from several kilometers away and scrap of the exploded cylinders were found metres away.
Jaipur Collector Dr Jitendra Soni said that a team of Hindustan Petroleum removed all the cylinders while following safety protocol and mechanism.
"Scrap of 42 cylinders was found around the area. They were all exploded cylinders. A total of 120 cylinders were safe. All of them were removed by the team of Hindustan Petroleum that followed all safety measures and protocols to sanitise the area," he told PTI.
The truck transporting the cylinders was parked outside a roadside hotel and its driver had stepped out for a meal when the tanker hit the truck. The cabin of the tanker caught fire and the cylinders spilled out of the truck.
Moments later, the cylinders started exploding and the scrap of some exploded cylinders were found several metres away.
The incident triggered panic in the area and policemen from several police stations were rushed to the spot. The traffic on the highway was immediately stopped and the fire was controlled.
Deputy CM Prem Chand Bairwa was at the spot to take stock of the situation.
"The tanker driver was burnt alive in the incident. Another man is injured," Deepak Khandelwal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dudu, said.
He said the traffic was later resumed on the highway.
Eyewitnesses claimed that a Regional Transport Office squad was stopping vehicles for checking on the highway and to avoid them, the tanker driver changed his lane suddenly and lost control, leading to the collision.
The district collector said the reason for the collision was being investigated.
In December last year, an LPG tanker collided with a truck near Bhankrota in Jaipur on the same highway, sparking a massive fireball that turned a stretch of the highway into an inferno, killing 19 people.&nbsp;

Eleven patients were being treated in the ICU at the time, said trauma centre in-charge Dr Anurag Dakhad. The fire, which erupted in the storage area around midnight, is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit.
The flames spread fast and rescuers could pull out only five patients.
"Six people, two women and four men died, and five are undergoing treatment," Dhakad said. "Fourteen other patients were admitted in a different ICU, and all were successfully evacuated to safer locations," he added.
Walls blackened with smoke and soot, equipment twisted out of shape in the heat and shattered glass told the tale of the horrors that unfolded when the fire broke out.
Though some reports claimed eight patients died in the fire, Dhakad and hospital superintendent Sushil Bhati maintained that the number of deaths was six.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an X post in Hindi, "The loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon." The state government has formed a high-level committee to probe the incident.
SMS hospital is Rajasthan's biggest government health facility, treating patients from across the state and elsewhere.
The deceased were identified as Pintu from Sikar, Dilip and Bahadur from Jaipur, and Shrinath, Rukmini and Kusuma from Bharatpur.
Anguished relatives held a brief protest and alleged that authorities were negligent, ignoring warnings and fleeing instead of rescuing the ailing and sick.
Among them was Rukmini's son Joginder.
"My mother was recovering and was supposed to be fine. But this disaster happened. When the smoke started, there were 15 to 16 people in the ward. People were trying to evacuate their own patients," he said.
"No one helped my mother. My elder brother grabbed a torch from the hospital staff, found our mother, and brought her out. No one went to help her. I could not save her and could not do anything," he told reporters.
Omprakash, whose brother Pintu was killed, said the fire spread rapidly.
"My brother was still inside. It took an hour and a half before they managed to pull Pintu out of the room. His body was not burned, but his face was completely blackened from the smoke. When we took him outside, there were no doctors present," he alleged.
The trauma centre building is in front of the main hospital building on busy Tonk Road.
Hospital staff and attendants evacuated patients with some wheeling beds outside the building. Firefighters brought the fire under control in around two hours, official said.
Vikas, a ward boy who was at the scene, told PTI that he and other staff members rescued as many people as they could before the billowing flames and smoke made it impossible for them to do so.
"We were inside the operating theatre when we heard about the fire, so we immediately rushed to rescue the people inside the centre. We managed to save at least three to four patients. However, as the flames intensified, we could no longer go into the building. We did our best to rescue as many as we could," he said.
Police could not enter the building immediately due to the heavy smoke, he added.
By the time the fire team arrived, the entire ward was engulfed in smoke. Firefighters had to break a window to start extinguishing the fire, he said.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel and Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham were among those who visited the trauma centre to take stock of the situation.
When Patel and Bedham reached the spot, relatives of some patients alleged that the staff had ignored early warning and fled during the fire. They also claimed that the hospital staff could not provide updates on the patients' condition.
"We noticed smoke and immediately informed the staff, but they did not pay any heed. When the fire broke out, they were the first to run. Now, we cannot get any information about our patients. We want to know their condition, but no one is telling us," said an attendant.
The chief minister, who spoke to doctors and patients, termed the incident extremely unfortunate and assured that immediate relief measures were being taken.
The state government appointed committee, headed by the commissioner of the Medical Education Department, Iqbal Khan, will look into the causes of the fire, the hospital's preparedness and response to the emergency, safety measures, and steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Describing the situation as heartbreaking, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, "It is extremely unfortunate that the families of the victims are angry with the way they have been treated by the state government. They said that no government representative has approached them or spoken to them so far." Gehlot demanded from the state government to form a judicial commission to thoroughly investigate the incident.
AICC general secretary and former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot also visited the hospital and expressed sorrow over the incident.
"This disaster has undoubtedly been caused due to negligence in one of the state's most renowned hospitals," he said, calling for accountability and swift action.
Director General of Police Rajeev Sharma also visited the hospital and said that he has instructed the Jaipur Police commissioner to form a special team having experts from FSL and fire department to thoroughly investigate the case.&nbsp;

Western Rajasthan saw light rains at a few places.
The highest rainfall was recorded at Khandar (Sawai Madhopur) at 230 mm, while other parts of the district reported 190-200 mm. Tonk, Baran and Jhalawar recorded rainfalls ranging from 110 mm to 170 mm till 8:30 am Wednesday.

Slabs of concrete, bricks and stones were piled up high and scores of people, including frantic parents and teachers, helped in the rescue effort, searching through the mounds of debris to pull out the children.
Police officials said they were informed of the tragedy around 7.45 am.
Five of the children studying in the school in Jhalawar&rsquo;s Manoharthana block, about 340 km from Jaipur, have been identified.
They are Kundar, Kanha, Raidas, Anuradha and Badal Bhil, said Station House Officer, Manoharthana, Nand Kishore.
The injured were taken to the Jhalawar hospital and the Manoharthana health centre.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among those who condoled the loss of lives.
"The news of the collapse of a school roof in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, resulting in the death and injury of several students, is extremely tragic. I pray that God grants strength to the grieving families to bear this pain.
"I wish for the speedy recovery of the students injured in this accident," Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.
The prime minister described the incident as tragic and deeply saddening.
&ldquo;My thoughts are with the affected students and their families in this difficult hour. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," he said.
Angry locals said they had informed the tehsildar and sub-divisional magistrate about the condition of the school building but no action was taken.
"This happened due to negligence of the administration," Balkishan, a local resident, told reporters.
Another local claimed that they had rescued the children and rushed them to the health centre in private vehicles before help from the administration arrived.
According to Jhalawar collector Ajay Singh, however, the district administration had recently instructed the education department to give information about any dilapidated school building but this one did not figure in the list.
&ldquo;I will get it investigated and action will be taken against whoever is found guilty," Singh told PTI.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said in his condolence message that concerned officials had been directed to ensure proper treatment of the injured children.
"May God grant a place to the departed divine souls in his lotus feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense sorrow," he said.
Education Minister Madan Dilawar promised a high-level inquiry will be conducted into the incident.
He directed officials to rush to the spot and ensure that the children get proper treatment.
"A very unfortunate incident occurred in Piplod village in Jhalawar where roof of a school collapsed. I have instructed district collector and education officer to make all kinds of arrangements for treatment. The collector and other officers have reached the spot," he said.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot hoped for the speedy recovery of the injured students.
"There are reports of many children and teachers getting injured due to the collapse of a government school building in Jhalawar's Manoharthana. I pray to God for minimum loss of life and speedy recovery of the injured, " he said on X.
Leader of opposition Tikaram Jully also expressed grief over the incident.

"A total of 11 people have died. Five were brought dead to SMS hospital. Five succumbed during treatment. One death was reported from Jaipuria hospital," Dr Deepak Maheshwari, Principal, SMS Medical College, said.
Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph, who was at the crash site, said an outlet nozzle of the LPG tanker was damaged in the collision, leading to a gas leak that caused the blaze.
The crash occurred around 5.30 am, when it was still dark, in front of a school, according to authorities.
"Vehicles behind the tanker were engulfed in flames. Other vehicles coming from the opposite directions also caught fire and the vehicles collided," Joseph said.
The gas leak spread the fire in a flash, leaving no scope for those in nearby vehicles to come out. People were seen rushing and taking off clothes engulfed in flames.
The injured were rushed to the SMS hospital in Jaipur in more than 25 ambulances.
Forty-three people were brought to the hospital, seven of whom are on ventilator support, Dr Maheshwawri said.
Officials at the spot indicated that the casualty count may go up.
The Rajasthan government announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and his predecessor Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over the deaths.
In a post on X, Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Modi also spoke to CM Sharma to enquire about the incident and assured him of all possible support.
Earlier in the day, people reported witnessing flames from nearly a kilometre away as thick black smoke filled the sky and ambulances and fire brigade vehicles rushed towards the crash zone. A school van driver on his way to pick students recounted with horror the sight of a man engulfed in flames on the road.
The crash initially affected a nearly 300-metre stretch of the highway, leading to a long queue of vehicles. The traffic thickened with time and by afternoon choked the arterial road, leading to diversions.
Authorities were clearing the highway of the burnt vehicles to resume vehicular movement.
Thirty-seven vehicles, including several tailers, trucks and containers, two buses, as many pickups and bikes, one auto rickshaws and seven cars, were damaged in fire.
In the wake of the incident, Sharma along with Khimsar, rushed to SMS hospital.
Sharma also visited the accident site and spoke to police.
"I visited the hospital as soon as I got the incident. This is a very unfortunate incident. Instructions have been given to ensure proper treatment and other arrangements," he told reporters at the crash site.
Khimsar told reporters at the hospital that all doctors, resident doctors, and nursing staff had been called in to manage the situation and another ward opened to accommodate patients.
A 'green corridor' was set up from the accident site to the SMS hospital, he added.
An official said a private sleeper bus headed for Jaipur from Udaipur was behind the gas tanker when the accident occurred and efforts were underway to find the details of the passengers onboard.
A fire department official said, "A few fire tenders from Mansarover were rushed to the spot based on primary information, but later more were sent from other stations as well."
A team from the regional transport office also reached the spot to investigate the incident and Forensic Science Laboratory teams collected evidence.
Locals complained of itching in the eyes and breathing problems due to the smoke. Some said a few birds were found dead nearby.
A pipe factory along the highway suffered damages in the incident.
Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa and Minister of State for Home Jawahwar Singh Bedham also reached the accident site, while state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra and several BJP and Congress MLAs visited the hospital.
The school van driver told PTI that the flames were visible from a kilometre away and there was panic and chaos on the highway.
"As I got closer to the spot, I saw people running in haste and shouting for help. I saw a man engulfed in flames. It was a frightening scene. Fire brigades and ambulances were there but it was difficult for them to reach the spot initially," he said.
Jaipur Police has issued the helpline numbers 91-66-347-551, 87-64-688-431 and 73-00-363-636 for people to get in touch for inquiries or relevant information.
Dotasra told reporters at the site, "Many of the injured are critical. Such incidents should not happen and for this, governments should make arrangements."
He said the government should form a high-level committee and take concrete action so that such incidents are not repeated.

A massive haul of 150 kg of explosives, along with 200 cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, was seized from a car, police said on Wednesday.&nbsp;
Two people have been arrested, and preliminary investigations suggest that the explosives were intended for blasting at illegal mining sites in the Aravallis.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source, destination, intended use, and possible links of the seized material. The accused have been identified as Surendra Patwa and Surendra Mochi, both residents of Bundi district.
DSP Tonk City Mrityunjay Mishra said the accused were transporting the explosives from Bundi to Tonk. While patrolling on National Highway-52 (Tonk-Jaipur), the accused claimed they were carrying fertiliser for agricultural purposes in sacks. However, on inspection, ammonium nitrate was found instead.
In addition to ammonium nitrate, the police seized 200 cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire, measuring approximately 1,100 metres. The car used for transporting the material was also seized. Mishra said the operation was carried out promptly after receiving specific intelligence inputs.
The large-scale seizure on New Year's Eve caused panic in the region ahead of festivities.&nbsp;

Three people, including the CEO of a private IT company, have been arrested for alleged gangrape of a female manager of the company after a birthday party in Rajasthan's Udaipur, police said on Friday.
According to police, the accused CEO, Jitesh Sisodia, had organised a party on his birthday last Saturday, in which the manager was also a guest.
The other accused in the case were a female executive head of the company and her husband Gaurav Sirohi of Meerut.
All three accused were arrested on Thursday and produced before a court, which remanded them to four-day police custody.
"The accused were arrested following the registration of a case at Sukher police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They were produced before a court on Thursday and sent on four-day police remand," Udaipur Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal said.
According to the woman's complaint, she was left alone as other guests gradually left after the party. The female executive head then offered to drop her home and took the woman in her car, in which Sisodia and Sirohi were also seated.
On the way, they bought something resembling cigarettes from a shop and offered it to the woman. She allegedly lost consciousness after consuming it. She woke up the next morning to realise that she was sexually assaulted, the complaint said.
Based on the woman manager's complaint, a case was registered, and the three accused were detained and arrested after interrogation, police said.
The woman's medical examination was done and statements were recorded, and the case was handed over to Additional Superintendent of Police Madhuri Verma, they added.

At least 12 people were killed and as many injured when a speeding dumper truck rammed into several vehicles in Jaipur's Harmada area on Monday afternoon, officials said.
"The dumper hit several vehicles in a chain collision near Loha Mandi. Twelve people died in the accident and as many have been injured," Jaipur District Collector Jitendra Soni told PTI.
Some of the injured are in critical condition and have been referred to the SMS Hospital's trauma centre.
The dumper was empty and coming from Road No. 14 towards the Loha Mandi petrol pump when it began hitting vehicles one after another over a stretch of nearly 300 metres.
Police teams rushed to the site, diverted traffic and initiated efforts to remove the damaged vehicles from the highway. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals in ambulances.
This is the second major road accident in Rajasthan in as many days. At least 15 people, including 10 women and four children, died and two others were injured when a tempo traveller rammed into a stationary trailer truck in Phalodi area on Sunday evening.

The tragic accident took place near Matoda village on the Bharat Mala Highway, officials added. &ldquo;Fifteen passengers died, while two others sustained serious injuries. The injured were first taken to a hospital in Osian for primary treatment and later referred to Jodhpur,&rdquo; Jodhpur Police Commissioner Om Prakash said.
According to police, the victims were residents of the Sursagar area in Jodhpur and were returning from the Kolayat temple in Bikaner after offering prayers at the Kapil Muni Ashram. All the bodies have been kept in the mortuary of the Osian government hospital.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the incident and directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to the victims' families and ensure proper medical care for the injured.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also conveyed his condolences. In a post on X, he wrote, &ldquo;I have just received the news that 15 people have died in a road accident in Matoda, Phalodi. Hearing this, my heart is extremely saddened. I pray to God to grant a place at His holy feet to all the deceased, give strength to their families, and a speedy recovery to the injured.&rdquo;
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the loss of lives in the Phalodi accident. &ldquo;Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Phalodi district, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,&rdquo; the PMO said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office announced that an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister&rsquo;s National Relief Fund would be provided to the next of kin of those who died, while the injured would receive ₹50,000 each.

The Department of Personnel issued an order suspending Chhotu Lal Sharma, who was posted as sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Pratapgarh, on Thursday night, citing administrative reasons.
During his suspension period, Sharma will be attached to the Secretariat, Personnel Department, in Jaipur, the order said.
The action followed after Sharma and a CNG pump employee were caught on camera on Wednesday, slapping each other after a dispute over refuelling the former's vehicle.
The incident, which was captured on CCTV camera, showed the SDM arguing with the employees, who allegedly refused to refuel his vehicle before another.
Police have arrested three petrol pump staff &ndash; Deepak Mali, Prabhu Lal Kumawat and Raja Sharma &ndash; in connection with the incident, and further investigation is underway, officials said.&nbsp;
