Quixplained: why is Kerala experiencing heavy rain?

Over 22 people have died due to incessant heavy rainfall and landslides in Kerala. The southern state has been experiencing severe rain-related weather conditions since Thursday.

Why is causing such heavy rainfall in Kerala?

A low-pressure system developed in the east-central Arabian Sea on October 14.

This system then moved closer to the Kerala coast and triggered severe weather causing heavy to very heavy rainfall in at least 6 districts in Southern Kerala.

Another reason that is being cited by weather experts is that southwest monsoons, which has withdrawn from west, north, central and eastern India regions, is still active over southern states.

Southwest monsoon generally withdraws from Kerala by September 30 making way for northeast monsoons.

The met department has warned of possible bad weather in 11 districts on Monday.
