PM Modi advocates 10% edible oil cut to tackle obesity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 119th episode of Mann Ki Baat, has called on Indians to reduce their edible oil consumption by 10% to combat rising obesity rates. Citing a study that highlights one in eight people globally is living with obesity, Modi noted that obesity among children has quadrupled in recent years.

India's edible oil consumption: a closer look

India currently consumes 260 lakh tonnes of edible oil annually, with 160 lakh tonnes of this being imported. The nation's per capita oil consumption is 17 kg per person per year, though this varies by region.

  • In Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Maharashtra, consumption is higher at 28 kg per person, linked to affordability and dietary habits.
  • North India sees consumption levels at 18-20 kg per person annually, while South India averages 16-17 kg.
  • Eastern states report the lowest intake, at 13-14 kg per person, according to Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) data.

Comparatively, developed countries have higher consumption levels, with Europe averaging 35 kg per person and the United States exceeding 40 kg. Conversely, South Africa records a lower intake of 10-12 kg per person.

Modi's initiative for a healthier future

With a focus on promoting healthier eating habits, PM Modi urged citizens to reduce oil usage at home. "You should decide that you will use 10% less oil every month. By making small changes in our eating habits, we can build a healthier and disease-free future," he stated.

Taking this initiative further, the Prime Minister nominated 10 prominent individuals on February 24 to raise awareness and inspire others to cut down on edible oil consumption. He also encouraged them to nominate 10 more people each, aiming to transform the campaign into a nationwide movement.
