The lattice screen that was damaged surrounds the empty grave of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, who intended to be burried there before being exiled to Burma by the British.&nbsp;
The Indian Express reported that the monument's in-charge filed a complaint with local police. However, there are conflicting reports that suggest that the police claim not to have received any such complaint from the ASI.&nbsp;
As the social media users came across this news, they started outraging over it. Historian William Dalrymple, known for his work on Mughal history, criticised the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for negligence, calling the incident "appalling."

A contractor has been booked for allegedly printing the tricolour upside down on the banners for a Viksit Bharat event in Maharashtra.

An offence has been registered against a contractor for allegedly printing the tricolour upside down on banners that served as a backdrop for an event organised in Maharashtra's Thane district to view Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with beneficiaries of Viksit Bharat Sankalpa Yatra, police said on Monday.
The banners were displayed on the stage during the programme held on the premises of Kalher gram panchayat in Bhiwandi on December 9, an official said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the block development officer of Bhiwandi, an offence under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, has been registered against the contractor, the official from Narpoli police station said.
A probe is underway, and no arrest has been made so far, he said.
The contractor was asked to print banners for the programme organised by the Thane Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti, the official said.
Instead of printing the sample of the background provided by the authorities, he allegedly printed the tricolour upside down, he said.
Union Minister of State Kapil Patil, Thane Guardian Minister Shamburaj Desai and Collector Ashok Shingare, among other dignitaries, were present for the event, it was stated.&nbsp;

BJP's parent organisation the Jan Sangh was founded on three core agendas - building the Ram temple, full integration of J&amp;K into India by removing its special status and implementins Uniform Civil Code.&nbsp;
Coalition compulsions prevented the BJP from outrightly taking steps to fulfill these agendas but after it received a thumping majority for a second consecutive time in 2019, they moved swiftly.&nbsp;
First the BJP govt stripped J&amp;K of its special status in August 2019, then in November same year the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Ram Mandir movement. On December 11 this year, the move to water down Article 370 received the top court's approval. In January next year, the new Ram Mandir in Ayodhya will be inaugurated.&nbsp;
BJP's third agenda, Uniform Civil Code, is now expected to take centrestage in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;

"We direct that steps shall be taken by the Election Commission of India to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir constituted under Section 14 of the Reorganisation Act by September 30, 2024. Restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible," the CJI said.
Justice Chandrachud referred to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's statement that Jammu and Kashmir's statehood will be restored, except for the carving out of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
"In view of the statement we do not find it necessary to determine whether the reorganisation of the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir is permissible under Article 3.

India's foreign ministry has said that around 230 Indians are likely to be evacuated from Israel on Friday

Around 230 Indians are expected to be brought back from Israel on Friday in a chartered flight under Operation Ajay, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
India launched the operation to facilitate the return of those Indians who wish to come back home as a series of brazen attacks on Israeli towns by Hamas militants over the weekend triggered fresh tensions in the region.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing on Thursday that the chartered flight is expected to reach Tel Aviv this evening and it will bring back the first batch of around 230 Indians on Friday.
We are closely monitoring the situation, he said.
On the attacks by Hamas on Israeli cities, Bagchi said India considers them as terrorist strikes.
To a question on India's position on the Palestine issue, he said New Delhi always advocated resumption of direct talks towards establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine living side-by-side and at peace with Israel.

The foundation of a 'new and developed' Kashmir has been laid and when India becomes developed, Kashmir will stand equally among the other states, where tourists from across the world would come, Shah said in the Rajya Sabha.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday assured the country that the beginning of building a "new and developed Kashmir" that will be free from terrorism has been made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that full statehood would be restored to Jammu and Kashmir at an appropriate time.
Speaking in Rajya Sabha, he also hailed the Supreme Court's Monday verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370 as historic and said there will now be only "one Constitution, one national flag and one prime minister".
He attacked the opposition saying it is unable to see the change on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir after the scrapping of Article 370 and said the entire country has understood that it was first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's mistake in handling the Kashmir issue.
Shah also asserted that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) was an integral part of India and no one can snatch it.
Replying to discussions on two new bills, he said they have ensured reservation of 24 seats to people from PoK in the J-K assembly.
"I want to assure the people of the country, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised from the ramparts of the Red Fort, that the youth of Kashmir will no longer carry guns or stones and will instead carry laptops.
"The beginning of building a 'New Kashmir' has been made which will be free from terrorism. The foundation of a 'new and developed' Kashmir has been laid and when India becomes developed, Kashmir will stand equally among the other states, where tourists from across the world would come," he said in the Rajya Sabha.
"We are committed to providing justice to the people of Kashmir, its youth and children. We are sensitive towards them and not towards terrorists," he also said while attacking the Congress.
"The Supreme Court verdict is a historic decision and I welcome it. Now there will be only one Constitution, one flag and one prime minister," Shah said.
In a landmark verdict, a five-judge constitution bench headed by CJI D Y Chandrachud on Monday unanimously upheld the Centre's August 5, 2019 decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370, while directing restoration of statehood for J&amp;K at the earliest and holding the assembly elections by September 30, 2024. In an apparent reference to the Nehru, Abdullah and Mufti families, Shah alleged that three families deprived the ST and poor people of Kashmir of their rights, as several laws were not implemented in Jammu and Kashmir earlier.
"They (Opposition) will not be able to see the change, there is a problem with their glasses. They are not ready to rectify their mistake.... But people do not care anymore about them. The entire country has understood that it was Nehru's mistake," Shah said.
He also attacked the Congress for being against the other backward classes, alleging that it was because of them that the OBCs did not get reservation under various schemes in Jammu and Kashmir, which the new bills have now ensured.
He also alleged that the Congress has always been opposed to OBCs and their rights as they opposed the Mandal Commission too.
"The Congress party has always opposed the other backward classes and their rights," he said.
Shah also targeted the Congress and INDIA bloc over the huge recovery of cash during income tax raids on a company linked to a Congress MP from Jharkhand, wondering why he has not yet been suspended by the Congress.
He said the bank machines have also given up and the counting of notes has continued for more than five days.

He was replying to the over four-hour debate on the JK Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and JK Reservation (Amendment) Bill - seeking to nominate two members from the Kashmiri migrant community and one representing the displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to the legislative assembly, besides providing reservation to certain communities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Parliament has now passed the two bills as Rajya Sabha cleared them with a voice vote on Monday after Shah's reply. They were passed by Lok Sabha last week.
The home minister said the two bills related to Jammu and Kashmir brought by the government would give justice to those deprived of their rights for the last 75 years and asserted that reservation to the displaced people would give them a voice in the legislature.

He also alleged that Jammu and Kashmir suffered due to the "mistakes" of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and listed decisions like the "untimely" ceasefire and taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations among them.
The opposition led by the Congress, however, walked out of the House midway during the Home Minister's reply.

Congress on Article 370 verdict: welcome SC's judgement on full statehood but...

Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Abhishek Singhvi said the judgement of the Supreme Court in cases concerning the abrogation of Artitcle 370 has decided many issues, but has left some.

The Congress on Monday demanded immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and said assembly elections should be held there immediately to enable people to elect a government of their choice.
The party's reaction came after the SC unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 that bestowed special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and directed restoration of statehood "at the earliest" as well as elections to the assembly by September 30 next year.
Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Abhishek Singhvi said the judgement of the Supreme Court in cases concerning the abrogation of Artitcle 370 has decided many issues, but has left some.
The Judgement needs a careful study, Chidambaram said, noting "prima facie we respectfully disagree with judgment on the manner in which Art 370 was abrogated".
He said the Congress has always demanded restoration of full statehood of J and K and "we welcome the SC verdict in this regard".
"Full statehood must be restored immediately. The aspirations of people of Ladakh must also be fulfilled. We welcome the SC direction to hold assembly elections. However, we believe elections should be held immediately and there is no reason to wait till September 30, 2024," the senior Congress leader said.
"When elections are held, the people of J&amp;K will have the opportunity to express their views on the crucial questions that we debated in the SC. An opportunity that has been denied to them so far," he said.
"We are also disappointed that SC did not decide the question of dismembering the state and reducing its status to two union territories. That question is being reserved for adjudication in a suitable case in future," he said.
Singhvi also said that the Supreme Court verdict is the law of the land now and the debate on the issue has now come to an end. "Democracy, and not autocracy, is the demand of every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir. Why is the BJP afraid of an elected government," Singhvi asked.
Ending a decades-long debate, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, delivered three concurring judgements upholding abrogation of the Constitutional schemes that provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir when it was annexed to the Union of India in 1947.

Writing the judgement for himself and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant, the CJI said Article 370 was a temporary provision and the president was empowered to revoke it in the absence of the Constituent Assembly of the erstwhile state.
The Supreme Court verdict is a "resounding declaration of hope, progress, unity for our sisters and brothers in J&amp;K, Ladakh", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.&nbsp;

In his response to the Supreme Court verdict on Article 370, AIMIM chief Assaduddin Owaisi asked why the apex court didn't set a timeline for the restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday said the biggest losers of the Union's decision to abrogate Article 370 will be the Dogras of Jammu and Buddhists of Ladakh, who will have to face demographic change.
He responded to the Supreme Court verdict upholding the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370 on X (formerly Twitter).
"The biggest losers of the Union's decision will be the Dogras of Jammu and Buddhists of Ladakh, who will have to face demographic change," he said.
He asked as to why there is no timeline on the reinstatement of statehood.
"It&rsquo;s already been five years of Delhi rule in J&amp;K. Assembly elections should be held in the state at the earliest. Along with Lok Sabha elections in 2024," he said.
There was no doubt that the state is an integral part of India, but being an integral part does not mean that it did not have a distinct constitutional relationship with the Union, he claimed.
"This constitutional relationship was made permanent after the dissolution of the constituent assembly of Kashmir," he said.
He alleged that once the Centre's decision on abrogation of Article 370 is legitimised, there is nothing stopping the Union Government from making Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad or Mumbai a Union Territory.
"I have said it once and I will say it again. Once this has been legitimised, there is nothing stopping the union govt from making Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad or Mumbai a Union Territory," he said.
Citing the example of Ladakh, Owaisi said it is being ruled by Lt. Governor, with no democratic representation at all.
Article 370 was abrogated without any public deliberation taking place in Kashmir and without an elected legislative assembly in place, he alleged.
Owaisi quoted the Chief Justice of India (CJI) having said at a seminar in 2019 that "public deliberation will always be a threat to those who achieved power in its absence." "The question is whether you can abrogate the special status of a state by putting the whole state in curfew, while it is subject to Article 356, and without an elected legislative assembly in place? Who in Kashmir had the right to deliberate on August 5?," he said.

The Supreme Court in the Bommai judgement had said that federalism is part of the basic structure of the constitution.
"Federalism means that the state has its voice and in its area of competence, it has complete freedom to operate. How is it that Parliament can speak in place of the Assembly? How is it that Parliament can pass a resolution that was to be passed by the Assembly in the constitution?" he said.
For him, Owaisi said, the manner in which Article 370 was abrogated was a violation of constitutional morality.
Even worse, the abrogation, bifurcation and downgrading of the state to union territory is "a grand betrayal of the solemn promise that the Union of India had made to the people of Kashmir," he claimed.
The Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 bestowing special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and directed restoration of statehood "at the earliest" as well as elections to the assembly by September 30 next year.
