Now, AAP govt Vs Governor in Punjab: fresh stand-off has 'Operation Lotus' link

Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit has scuttled a move by the ruling Aam Admi Party which wants to prove the majority of the house amid its allegations that BJP was trying to poach its lawmakers to topple the Arvind Kejriwal government.

Now, AAP govt Vs Governor in Punjab: fresh stand-off has 'Operation Lotus' link

Now, AAP govt Vs Governor in Punjab : Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday withdrew his order summoning a special Assembly session on September 22 for the AAP govt to move a confidence motion.

The Raj Bhavan cited absence of specific rules on summoning the Assembly for considering only a confidence motion.

The decision came after Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma approached the governor, arguing that there was no legal provision to convene a special session of the Assembly to just move a 'confidence motion' in favour of the state government.

The AAP government in Punjab had sought the special session to bring a confidence motion, days after it accused the BJP of trying to topple its government.

AAP leaders have been complaining of poaching attempts by the BJP to topple the government in Punjab, as part of what AAP and other Opposition parties claim to be BJP's "Operation Lotus". The AAP leadership wanted to prove that their house was intact, through a confidence motion in the assembly.

Criticising the Governor's decision to withdraw the order for the summoning of the assembly session for a confidence vote, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "How can the governor refuse a session called by the cabinet? Then democracy is over. Two days ago, the Governor gave permission for the session. When Operation Lotus started failing and the number was not completed, a call came from above asking to withdraw the permission."
