Navi Mumbai Woman Duped in Rs 1 Lakh Currency Exchange Scam

Thane, Jul 30 (PTI) Three individuals, who remain unidentified, allegedly deceived a Navi Mumbai woman out of Rs 1 lakh with a false promise of providing her US currency in exchange for the Indian money, according to authorities on Wednesday.

The woman, aged 38 and residing in Badlapur within Maharashtra's Thane district, operates a modest eatery in the Kopri village area of Navi Mumbai.

The perpetrators reportedly reached out to her via phone, claiming they would furnish her with USD 1,600 in exchange for Rs 1 lakh, as stated by an official from the APMC police station.

On Monday, the suspects visited the woman's eatery, whereupon she handed them Rs 1 lakh. However, after receiving the money, they absconded without delivering the promised US dollars.

Following her complaint, authorities quickly registered a First Information Report (FIR) on the same day against the suspects under sections 318(4) for cheating and 3(5) for common intention of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and are also working to trace the phone number the accused used to contact the victim. Officials are cautioning the public to be wary of any unofficial currency exchange dealings.
