Navi Mumbai: Case Filed Against Transgenders Over Anti-Encroachment Clash

Thane, Jul 31 (PTI) - In Navi Mumbai, a case has been registered against five transgender individuals for allegedly assaulting public servants and obstructing an anti-encroachment operation carried out by the local civic body. This development was shared by an official on Thursday.

The incident unfolded on July 28 when members of the anti-encroachment department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), accompanied by police personnel, arrived at a ground in the Rabale area to address an alleged encroachment.

The concerned plot of land is situated directly opposite the Rabale police station and was reportedly occupied by a group of transgender persons, according to an official from the Rabale police station.

"When the authorities arrived at the scene, there were about 10 to 12 individuals on the encroached plot," stated the official. "The group engaged in a heated argument, used offensive language, and behaved arrogantly, pushing the civic and police staff."

Additionally, the group attempted to confront the authorities by making provocative gestures and blocking traffic, which further hindered the officials from executing their duties, police reported.

Five members from this group were detained for questioning and subsequently taken to the police station, where they allegedly continued to abuse the security personnel present, the official added.

A case has been filed against the five transgender persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Mumbai Police Act.

An investigation into the case is currently ongoing.
