<p>Telangana Congress chief A Revanth Reddy will be the new chief minister of the state.</p>
<p>Announcing the decision at the party headquarters here on Tuesday, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said the swearing-in will take place on December 7 in Hyderabad.</p>
<p>"After considering the report of observers and after discussion with senior leaders, the Congress president has decided to go with Revanth Reddy as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Telangana," he said.</p>
<p>Revanth Reddy was the frontrunner for the top post in the state after the party staged a stupendous victory in assembly elections by winning 64 seats in Telangana, upstaging the BRS.</p>
<p>Venugopal said the Congress Legislature Party in Telangana had unanimously decided to authorise the Congress president to take a decision to appoint the CLP leader in its meeting earlier.</p>
<p>He said the party had appointed four observers including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Deepa Dasmunshi, Ajoy Kumar and K J George, besides AICC general secretary in-charge Manikrao Thakre.</p>
<p>Shivakumar and Thakre were present as Venugopal announced the party high command's decision on Telangana.</p>
<p>He did not answer queries on how many ministers would be sworn in and whether there would be any deputy chief ministers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), &nbsp;the national capital, Delhi, has experienced the most gruesome murder cases in 2022. NCRB revealed that 16 cases of murders arose out of love affairs in the city.</p>
<p>The cases include the sensational murder of Shraddha Walker, who was allegedly strangled and chopped into 35 pieces by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawala, who suspected her of being involved with another man.&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to the NCRB data, Delhi recorded 501 cases of murder, and at least 13 of them were committed over illicit relationships, 54 in personal enmity, and 197 in family, property, and other disputes.</p>
<p>At least 35 murders took place over money, and one was over water. Two cases of murder emerged out of incidents of road rage, and three were due to gang rivalry.</p>
<p>At least 10 cases of murder were committed during dacoity and robbery bids in Delhi, the report said.</p>
<p>Also, human sacrifice became the cause of at least one murder case in the national capital.</p>

<p>Right-wing group Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena's president Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was shot dead by unidentified assailants here on Tuesday, police said.</p>
<p>According to police, the incident took place in the Shyam Nagar area this afternoon.</p>
<p>"As per initial reports, four people entered a house where Gogamedi was present and opened fire at him. One of Gogamedi's security personnel and another person were injured in the firing," Rajasthan Director General of Police (DGP) Umesh Mishra told PTI.</p>
<p>Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph told PTI that Gogamedi was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Severe cyclonic storm Michaung&rsquo;s landfall is currently underway with the eye of the cyclone situated near Bapatla in south Andhra Pradesh coast, said an official on Tuesday.</p>
<p>The weather system over the west-central Bay of Bengal, running along and off the south Andhra Pradesh coast is moving nearly northwards, parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to complete crossing in the next two hours, the official said.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Severe cyclonic storm Michaung is currently making landfall close to Bapatla. It is expected to complete its landfall in the next two hours. It is expected to complete crossing by 2 pm,&rdquo; an Amaravati Meteorological Centre official told PTI.</p>
<p>The Amaravati Meteorological Centre noted that the intensity of gales near the centre of the severe cyclonic storm is 90 - 100 km per hour and gusting up to 110 kmph.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, 9,454 people have been evacuated from the seven districts of Konaseema, Kakinada, Krishna, Bapatla and Prakasam to safety in 211 relief camps, according to a dataset shared by APSDMA with PTI.</p>
<p>The state government evacuated 910 people from Konaseema district, Kakinada (523), Krishna (1,814), Bapatla (702), Prakasam (128), Nellore (1,991) and Tirupati (3,386).</p>
<p>As part of relief efforts, 10,251 food packets were distributed and 18,068 water packets.</p>
<p>With the severe cyclonic storm Michaung anticipated to hit Bapatla during its passage, residents have been advised against going outdoors.</p>
<p>Bapatla district superintendent of police Vakul Jindal told PTI that people living in thatched houses in the region have been evacuated.</p>
<p>We are vigilant and we will see what happens and respond accordingly, Jindal said. While some people were moved to shelters in vehicles, people living nearby walked there.</p>
<p>Earlier on Monday, Bapatla district collector Ranjit Basha, Jindal and MLA K Raghupati visited Suryalanka coast and issued instructions to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and police officials.</p>
<p>Every police station in the district has been equipped with a JCB excavator, cutter machines, ropes and expert swimmers.</p>
<p>Taking past incidents into account, district police identified 24 vulnerable bridges and deployed police personnel there.</p>
<p>Similarly, 300 police personnel and other officials have been deployed in villages which are likely to suffer inundation.</p>
<p>Likewise, 60 policemen have been kept on standby at the district police headquarters to attend to emergencies.</p>
<p>One NDRF and two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in the district. Police have evacuated people living in low lying areas.</p>
<p>In the event of an emergency, Bapatla district police told people to reach out to helplines 100, 112 and police control room number 8333813228.</p>
<p>Heavy rains continue to lash several parts of Andhra Pradesh as the severe cyclonic storm looming over the Bay of Bengal sea close to Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Tamil Nadu coasts is making landfall.</p>
<p>The weather system is moving northwards close to the coast and some parts of the wall cloud region already lie overland.</p>
<p>The Meteorological Department forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gales in parts of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday.</p>
<p>It also forecast extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. On Tuesday, it forecast extremely heavy rainfall, greater than 204.4 mm, in isolated places of Konaseema, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Palnadu, Bapatla and Prakasam districts, along with heavy to very heavy rainfall, 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm, in parts of these districts.</p>
<p>Likewise, it forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Alluri Sitharamaraju, Kakinada, East Godavari, Kadapa and Nellore districts.</p>
<p>Further, the Meteorological Department forecast heavy rainfall, 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, in parts of Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Nandyala, Annamayya and Tirupati districts.</p>
<p>Except for the four Rayalaseema districts of Kurnool, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and Chittoor, several parts of the rest of the state are expected to be pounded by rains.</p>
<p>Several parts of West Godavari district have been witnessing intermittent rainfall since Sunday night, which intensified into heavy rainfall on Tuesday.</p>
<p>In view of several streams and water bodies overflowing in East Godavari district, superintendent of police P Jagadish said police personnel have been deployed across the district to carry out relief efforts.</p>
<p>Similarly, Anakapalli district SP K V Murali Krishna directed his subordinates to clear uprooted trees and keep JCB excavators and cutting machines ready for this purpose.</p>
<p>He also directed them to coordinate with other departments to restore powerlines. In the wake of swollen water bodies, Murali Krishna called on people observing &lsquo;karthika maasam&rsquo; rituals to avoid going to the seashore and other water bodies.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the official custodian of Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirupati, noted that all the five major dams in Tirumala have reached their full capacity by 4 am on Monday itself due to incessant rains in the past four days.</p>
<p>Papavinasanam, Akasaganga, Gogarbham, Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara are the chief water sources in Tirumala. Water is also drawn from Kalyani Dam in Tirupati.</p>
<p>About 100 mm of rainfall had been recorded in Tirumala in just 24hours by Monday evening.</p>
<p>Further, TTD imposed restrictions on the movement of two-wheelers on ghat roads.</p>
<p>Tirupati MLA and TTD chairman B Karunakara Reddy visited cyclone affected people on Tuesday morning at Pulavanigunta and Gollavanigunta and interacted with them, and assured help.</p>
<p>Accompanied by officials, he told the affected people to stay vigilant and reach out whenever they need help. Reddy directed officials to provide food and drinking water to the affected people in Tirupati.</p>
<p>The South Central Railway Zone has set up helplines across its Divisions in Andhra Pradesh.</p>

<p>VK Pandian, the former private secretary of Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, has been given a cabinet ministerial rank hours after he took voluntary retirement.</p>

<p>V K Pandian, the former aide to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, has been appointed Chairman 5T (Transformational Initiatives) with the rank of a cabinet minister, an official notification said on Tuesday.</p>
<p>The development comes less than 24 hours after Pandian took voluntary retirement from government service.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Shri V K Pandian is hereby appointed as Chairman 5T (Transformational Initiatives) and Nabin Odisha in the rank of Cabinet Minister. Pandian shall work directly under the Chief Minister,&rdquo; the General Administration and Public Grievance Department said.</p>
<p>Pandian joined the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in 2011, and since then, he has been Patnaik's private secretary.</p>
<p>After Patnaik became the chief minister for the fifth time in 2019, Pandian was given the additional responsibility of '5T secretary' to implement some transformational initiatives in government departments.</p>

<p>A political slugfest broke out following the murder. While BJP claimed it was a "revenge plan" of the Congress after losing the state, Congress called it the 'return of jungle raj' as soon as the BJP came to power.</p>
<p>All prominent political leaders of the state including Congress's Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, BJP's Vasundhara Raje, Rajyavardhan Rathore, have condemned the killing.</p>

<p>A Pakistani woman, Javeria Khanum, has arrived in India to marry a Kolkata man, Sameer Khan. Their wedding is set to be held in January. They have been in a relationship for five years.</p>

<p>A Pakistani woman on Tuesday crossed over to India from the Wagah-Attari International Border to marry a Kolkata resident with whom her marriage has been fixed in January next year.</p>
<p>Karachi resident Javeria Khanum crossed over into the Indian side from Attari in Amritsar district where she was welcomed by her fiance Sameer Khan and some members of his family to the beats of 'dhol'.</p>
<p>Khanum has been granted a 45-day visa after two previous visa rejections and the Covid pandemic stalled their plans for around five years.</p>
<p>The couple, in a brief interaction with reporters at Attari, said the marriage will be solemnised in January next year.</p>
<p>"I have been granted a 45-day visa. I am very happy to be here. Just on arrival, I am already getting so much love here. In the first week of January the marriage will be solemnised," she said.</p>
<p>She had tried to get a visa on two occasions, but got lucky the third time. "It is a happy ending and a happy beginning," she said, expressing her happiness at being able to travel to India to get married.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Everyone back home was very happy. I can&rsquo;t believe I have got the visa after five years,&rdquo; she added.</p>
<p>Sharing how the couple got in touch, Khan said he expressed interest in marrying Khanum after seeing her photo on his mother&rsquo;s phone.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This started in May 2018. I had come home from Germany where I was studying. I saw her photo on my mother's phone and expressed my interest. I told my mother that I want to get married to Javeria,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p>Earlier, the visa was rejected twice and in between there was the Covid pandemic, Khan said, adding that he was thankful to the Indian Government for the visa.</p>
<p>"My mother is very happy now that we will be getting married in January next year," he said.</p>
<p>Khan said his friends from his time in Germany &ndash; from Africa, Spain, the United States and other countries &ndash; are likely to attend his wedding.</p>
<p>The couple then left to catch a flight from Amritsar to Kolkata.</p>

<p>DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has pulled up party MP DNV Senthil Kumar for his remarks describing Hindi heartland as "gaumutra states", the party said on Tuesday. DMK always insisted on the need for a dignified approach while making public remarks, the party added.</p>
<p>The Dharmapuri MP's remarks had drawn instant condemnation from the BJP as well as its ally Congress, whose leaders asked him to tender an apology.</p>
<p>Senior DMK leader and Organising Secretary RS Bharathi said the MP has tendered a public apology.</p>
<p>Referring to the Parliament speech of Kumar relating to the outcome of the five-state elections, Bharathi said the MP had used "a word that gave a wrong meaning." "Upon knowing this, party president and chief minister Stalin strongly rebuked Senthil Kumar," he said in a statement.</p>
<p>He added the MP has issued a statement seeking public apology, stating that he had not made the said remarks with any particular intention.</p>
<p>Bharathi stressed on the need for all to maintain dignity while making public opinions.</p>
<p>The DMK founder late CN Annaudurai's principles of "Duty-Dignity-Discipline '' should be followed by all, he said and urged that partymen should refrain from making personal opinions on national issues.</p>
<p>While participating in a discussion on J&amp;K Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill in the House, Kumar had said the BJP can win elections only in the Hindi heartland states and not in south India.</p>
<p>While his description of the Hindi heartland as "gaumutra" states was expunged by the Lok Sabha Speaker later, the remarks sparked a controversy with several members across party lines condemning the DMK leader and the video of his speech going viral on social media.</p>
<p>Facing flak, he later apologised.</p>
<p>"Commenting on the results of the five recent state assembly elections, I have used a word in an inappropriate way. Not using that term with any intent, I apologize for sending the wrong meaning across," he said in a post on X.</p>

<p>The severe cyclonic storm Michaung, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla on Tuesday and subsequently weakened into a cyclonic storm, left a trail of destruction in its wake.</p>
<p>Michaung is expected to subside into a deep depression over the next six hours, said an official.</p>
<p>The storm damaged 770-kilometre roads, uprooted 35 trees and killed three livestock, among others.</p>
<p>According to data shared by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), nearly 40 lakh people from 194 villages and two towns were affected by Michaung's impact, including the inundation of 25 villages.</p>
<p>Though there was no loss of human life on Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Director BR Ambedkar told PTI that a four-year-old boy died after a hut wall collapsed on him in Tirupati district on Monday.</p>
<p>While another person died in Bapatla district, Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal told PTI that the cause of death was not related to the cyclone.</p>
<p>"The lone deceased person was found in a drunken state on a road by his motorcycle, which was not submerged under water, in the Inkollu village," Jindal said.</p>
<p>Across the state, 204 relief camps are accommodating 15,173 evacuees. As part of relief efforts, 18,073 food packets and more than 1 lakh water packets were distributed. Eighty health camps were also organised.</p>
<p>For the affected districts, the state government has sanctioned Rs 23 crore for relief efforts.</p>
<p>The damaged structures include 78 huts and a cattle shed while 232 houses were marooned. Two kuccha houses were fully damaged.</p>
<p>Under the roads and buildings department, 770 kilometres of surface roads suffered damage in the districts of Konaseema (234 kilometres), Prakasam (55 kilometres), Nellore (433 kilometres) and Tirupati (48 kilometres).</p>
<p>Nellore also witnessed the highest number of trees being uprooted with 29 out of the total 35.</p>
<p>Under the municipal administration department, 376 streetlights and 7.5 kilometres of roads were damaged.</p>
<p>Fourteen minor irrigation sources were also damaged in Tirupati.</p>
<p>The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd suffered damage to 13 33-KV feeders, 312 11-KV feeders, 29 33/11-KV sub-feeders, nine 33-KV poles, 140 11-KV poles and 244-LT poles.</p>
<p>Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm, 10 places -- seven in Tirupati and three in Nellore -- experienced more than 200 mm rainfall on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Manubolu in Nellore district recorded 366.5 mm rainfall.</p>
<p>Six State Disaster Response Force and an equal number of National Disaster Response Force teams were pressed into service on Tuesday.</p>
<p>With the rainwater receding, the state government has decided to enumerate agriculture and horticulture damage, the CMO said.</p>
<p>The Meteorological Department, meanwhile, noted that Michaung weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centred over south coastal Andhra Pradesh near 16 degrees north (latitude) and 80.3 degrees east (longitude).</p>
<p>It is expected to move nearly northwards in the next six hours and further weaken into a deep depression, a Met official said in a press release.</p>
<p>Gales gusting up to speeds of 110 kilometres per hour are expected to prevail over west-central Bay of Bengal around the weather system for the next six hours and then gradually subside.</p>
<p>Along north Andhra Pradesh coast, squally winds reaching speeds of 60 kilometres per hour and gusting up to 65 kilometres per hour are likely to prevail over the next 12 hours and gradually decrease thereafter.</p>
<p>For Wednesday, the Met has forecast heavy rainfall -- 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm -- for Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema and Eluru districts.</p>

<p>Ashok Gehlot's OSD Lokesh Sharma on Tuesday alleged that the then deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot's movements and phone were tracked and monitored by the Gehlot government in the run-up to and during the rebellion Pilot had staged in 2020.</p>
<p>There was no immediate reaction from Congress leaders Gehlot and Pilot or their aides on the allegations.</p>
<p>Sharma, who was denied a ticket to contest the Rajasthan assembly polls and has been criticising Gehlot for the party's defeat in the elections, also said if the incidents of September last year, when a legislature party meeting was not allowed to take place by Gehlot loyalists, had not happened and the Congress observers had carried out the agenda for which they had come, the picture in Rajasthan would have been different.</p>
<p>The Congress leadership wanted to effect a leadership change and bring in Pilot as the chief minister.</p>
<p>He said the differences between Gehlot and Pilot "harmed" the party's prospects.</p>
<p>"When the political crisis of 2020 had come and Pilot ji had left with his 18 MLAs, then in such a situation, the government does put its machinery in to use and everyone is monitored, where do these people go, who do they meet and who do they speak with. So that is done and in that manner their monitoring was also done," Sharma alleged.</p>
<p>He claimed that the monitoring was happening from before the rebellion as there was some idea that such a thing could happen.</p>
<p>Asked about the details of the monitoring, Sharma told PTI, "I said monitoring was being done continuously which includes all these things -- movement, who are they speaking with, those things were being tracked and monitored." Sharma claimed that elections could have been fought better and the main reason for defeat was that ticket distribution was not done properly.</p>
<p>"There was no-anti incumbency against the government but people did not want to see many of the MLAs return as their representatives. Such reports were communicated to the chief minister. These were not just my reports but the AICC survey, and other reports were that sitting MLAs' tickets should be cut but it was not done," Sharma claimed.</p>
<p>Asked why action had not been taken on the reports, he said, "You can say it was his (Gehlot's) stubbornness. He probably felt it was his moral duty towards those who had helped him save his government." Sharma denied that he was making such allegations as he was denied a ticket.</p>
<p>He said it is up to the party to decide on his ticket which he was demanding as a party worker.</p>
<p>"I am saying so now as I want that corrective measures are taken as Lok Sabha polls are round the corner and it is important to set things right," he said.</p>
<p>On the day the Congress lost in Rajasthan, Sharma had blamed Gehlot for the defeat in the assembly polls and said that his experience, magic and schemes could not bring the Congress back to power in the state.</p>
<p>On Monday, replying to a question on an earlier statement of Sharma, Pilot had said, "I have seen the statement. It is strange. Because he was OSD to the chief minister, that's why it is a matter of concern. I believe the party will look into why he said so. And how much truth it holds."</p>
