Mumbai One App Revolutionizes City Travel with Unified Ticketing

The 'Mumbai One' app offers a unified QR-based ticketing solution for Mumbai's public transport, integrating 11 operators, supporting cashless transactions, and promoting contactless travel. With over 500 initial downloads, the app aligns with India's 'One Nation, One Mobility' vision.

Mumbai One App Revolutionizes City Travel with Unified Ticketing

Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) — The 'Mumbai One' mobile application, designed as a unified platform for booking diverse public transport tickets in Mumbai, became operational on Thursday, just a day after its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials have reported.

This innovative app allows commuters to secure a single QR-based digital ticket, which can be used across the city's Metro, Monorail, buses, and local train networks, as well as in the surrounding regions.

Developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the app became available for download starting at 5 am on Thursday, quickly achieving over 500 downloads by 8:30 am, according to officials. Previously, each public transport operator within the region had its individual digital ticketing system.

Touted as India's inaugural integrated common mobility app, 'Mumbai One' is set to eliminate the need for multiple paper tickets or individual bookings. However, the app currently does not support booking 'season' or return tickets for suburban trains.

This unified digital ticketing platform is tailored for the expansive Mumbai Metropolitan Region, empowering commuters to plan their travel and book tickets seamlessly across 11 different public transport operators.

During its launch, which coincided with the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the completion of Mumbai Metro 3 on Wednesday, PM Modi emphasized the initiative's goal to integrate various transport modes. He highlighted efforts to simplify travelling across different services, underscoring a broader vision for national mobility.

"Today, the country is advancing with the vision of One Nation, One Mobility. The Mumbai One app is a significant stride forward. Now Mumbaikars will no longer have to endure long lines for tickets," PM Modi remarked.

The app seamlessly integrates services from 11 public transport entities, which include suburban railways, Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3, and 7, Navi Mumbai Metro, Monorail, and civic bus operations from providers such as BEST, TMT (in Thane), NMMT (in Navi Mumbai), KDMT (in Kalyan Dombivli), and MBMT (in Mira Bhayandar).

The MMRDA asserts that the 'Mumbai One' app will not impose any extra charges on its users, with any related expenses absorbed by the authority. It supports both cashless and contactless transactions as well.

The application also includes a multimodal journey planner, helping users identify the swiftest and most cost-efficient routes, alongside offering real-time insights into route availability and service advisories.

As per MMRDA, the app operates on a MeitY-compliant Google Cloud Platform and harnesses Google Kubernetes Engine, ensuring robust data security, scalability, and uninterrupted service availability.

The authority anticipates that the system can handle up to 5 million transactions daily and projects its user base to expand from the current 1 million to 5 million within a year.
