Maharashtra GST Amendment Bill Aligns State with Central Laws

Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI) - On Thursday, the government led by Devendra Fadnavis took a significant step by presenting the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill in the state legislative assembly. This move aims to align the state GST laws with the central regulations.

Minister of State for Finance, Ashish Jaiswal, introduced the bill in the Lower House. The bill seeks to amend the Maharashtra GST Act, 2017, and proposes 13 changes in line with the Finance Act, 2025, which the Centre passed in March. "The amendments aim to harmonize the central and state GST laws, ensuring services are more streamlined, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly," he explained.

The amendments touch upon numerous crucial areas such as input service distributors, the time of supply, distribution of input tax credits, simplifying the appeals process, and mechanisms for tracking and tracing. Additionally, updates target the supply of specific goods and services, especially pertaining to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Free Trade Warehousing Zones (FTWZs).

One significant relief measure included is that taxpayers filing appeals that solely involve penalty demands will need to pre-deposit only 10 percent of the disputed amount.

Minister Jaiswal emphasized that the amendments go beyond technical or compliance-driven changes; they focus on enhancing the GST system's efficiency and user experience. "These reforms represent a major step towards making the GST regime more effective and taxpayer-friendly," he stated.
