The mishap took place at Draupathi temple in Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet.

In a distressing incident caught on camera, a crane part of a temple event crashed on 22 January 2023. At least 4 people died, and 6 were injured in the incident.

The mishap took place at Draupathi temple in Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet. In videos shared on social media, some people were seen suspended from the crane, right before it collapsed.

The crane was used by the devotees to perambulate around the temple and a few devotees were accepting flower garlands from those who had gathered to fulfill a vow when the incident occurred. The Mayilerum thiruvizha event at the Droupadiamman and Mandiamman temples at Kezhaveethi, Nemelli, in Arakkonam is an annual ritual held after the harvest festival (Pongal).

In the video of the mishap, which went viral, people were seen screaming and running helter-skelter, as the crane hit the ground. Some of the onlookers who recovered from the shock rushed to the help of the injured and shifted them to hospital with the help of the police.

Authorities said that permission to use the crane had not been secured by the organisers. The crane operator was taken into custody.
