ISRO says Joshimath sank 5.4 cm in 12 days, after 9 cm in 7 months | Uttarakhand land subsidence crisis

Joshimath town in Uttarakhand sank a startling 5.4 cm in just 12 days, according to analysis by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre said that land subsidence of 5.4 cm was recorded between 27 December 2022 and 8 January 2023.

In comparison, subsidence of 9 cm was recorded over a period of 7 months, between April and November 2022.

ISRO recorded the speed of land-sinking using satellite data.

The hill town is in upheaval since over 600 buildings recently developed cracks. The government evacuated thousands of people, while many buildings are being brought down to reduce pressure on the land.
