Hijab row: Teacher, parents argue in Mandya as Karnataka schools reopen

As schools reopened in Karnataka amid the hijab controversy, an argument reportedly broke out between parents and a teacher at an institute in Mandya.

At the Rotary School in Mandya, a teacher barred students from entering the campus while wearing hijab, as per news agency ANI. Parents reportedly said that students should be allowed to enter school premises while wearing hijab, and the headdress can be taken off inside classrooms.

Schools reopened in Karnataka for students till Class 10 after the government had ordered closure for 3 days due to tension over the hijab issue.

Prohibitory orders under IPC Section 144 have been imposed in areas considered sensitive, as per reports.

Last week, the Karnataka High Court had banned sporting of "saffron shawls, scarves, hijabs, religious flags within classrooms" by students in institutions where the College Development Committees have prescribed a dress code, as per reports. The High Court is hearing a petition by some students seeking the right to wear hijab inside classrooms.

The controversy erupted after some students at a pre-university government college in Udupi were barred from sitting in class without removing their hijab. As the issue snowballed, violent confrontations between pro and anti-hijab groups were reported from the state.
