The delegation, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, is scheduled to hold discussions with U.S. officials from May 17 to 20. Key meetings include those with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Meanwhile, India's chief negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, will engage with his U.S. counterpart from May 19 to 22.
These discussions are part of broader efforts by both nations to establish an interim trade agreement that promises "early mutual wins," in anticipation of finalizing the first phase of the comprehensive trade deal by the fall of this year.
"The negotiations are progressing very well, and our team is preparing to discuss further details with U.S. counterparts," Barthwal told reporters.
In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking in Doha, claimed that India has agreed to remove tariffs on several American goods. "India, which has one of the highest tariffs, has offered us a deal with no tariffs. This marks a significant change," Trump declared.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing reporters on the sidelines of an event, cautioned that trade negotiations are intricate. "These are complicated negotiations, and nothing is decided until everything is. Any trade deal must be mutually beneficial," he emphasized.
Officials are aiming to finalize this phase of negotiations by September-October, with a longer-term goal to double bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. "We are committed to enhancing trade with the U.S. The Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) will further strengthen this relationship," an official stated.
Key topics in the upcoming discussions will include market access, rules of origin, and non-tariff barriers. The negotiators hope to capitalize on a 90-day tariff pause window to push the talks forward. The U.S. suspended additional 26 percent tariffs on India until July 9, while maintaining baseline tariffs of 10 percent.
Previously, India's Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal held three-day discussions in Washington with Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch. Prior to this, Goyal met with Greer and Lutnick for bilateral talks in March.
As the U.S. continues to be India's largest trading partner&mdash;with bilateral trade reaching USD 131.84 billion in 2024-25&mdash;these negotiations are crucial. The U.S. constitutes around 18 percent of India's goods exports and 6.22 percent of imports, underscoring the importance of this evolving trade relationship.

State Forest Minister A K Saseendran said that the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) has been directed to investigate whether there were any lapses on the part of forest officials as claimed by the locals and submit a report.
Earlier in the day, police said, the tiger attacked the victim, Gafoor, and dragged him away according to another taping worker who was accompanying the victim.
A forest official confirmed that it was a tiger which attacked the tapping worker and that he was dragged away around 200 meters into the forest by the big cat.
The official also confirmed that there were bite marks on various parts of the victim's body.
Following the incident, local residents gathered in the area in large numbers and obstructed the removal of the body, alleging lapses on the part of the forest department in preventing the incident.
They told TV channels that the forest officials had been informed about the presence of the tiger in the area several months back when domestic and pet animals were being taken away by it.
"However, no action was taken. Even, they did not set up a cage to catch the tiger," the residents claimed and demanded that the feline be shot dead.
Gafoor's body was later allowed to be removed for postmortem after forest and district authorities assured the locals that steps would be taken to address the issue of wild animal attacks and requisite financial assistance would be provided to the victim's family, a forest official said.
Later in the day, Saseendran said the people's reaction in such a situation was understandable.
He said that all help would be provided to the family including for funeral arrangements and steps were being taken to capture the tiger.
The minister admitted that a few months ago there were reports of tiger presence in the area and forest officials had carried out an extensive search for the feline, but nothing was found.
"Subsequently, in the absence of the tiger, the forest officials' vigilance might have reduced a bit. Now we are taking all steps, including setting up cages and deploying kumki elephants (trained captive tuskers), to catch the tiger," he said.
The minister also said that he has spoken to the police, forest and other officials in the area and directed them to take preventive steps to ensure such incidents do not recur.
Meanwhile, Congress party in a statement said that Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the area regarding the incident and asked him to take steps to allay the fear of the people.
After the incident, Congress MLA A P Anilkumar visited the area and alleged that he had informed the DFO of the area and also Saseendran about the presence of the tiger in the area when the budget session was going on.
"There has been a serious lapse on the part of the forest officials in this case as they knew about the presence of the tiger in the area more than two months ago," he said.
Following the local's protest, a senior forest official told reporters that two teams with tranquilisers had started from Wayanad and Palakkad along with 'kumki' elephants to dart and catch the tiger.
"We need everyone's cooperation in the matter," he said to the local residents protesting against the incident.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the CM had requested the Members of Parliament from the state to put pressure on the Centre and get funds released to the state.
"It is said that about Rs 5,500 crore should be released to the state immediately. We should demand under the Centre and state relationship that is there. Last time a situation had come for the state government to go and stage a protest in Delhi as repeated attempts to get funds by putting pressure on the Centre failed. Such a situation should not come again...if funds are released on time it can be used for development," he added.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had led a protest in New Delhi in February last year against the Centre's "injustice" to the state in devolution of taxes.
The CM on Wednesday had chaired a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting here, and had alleged that development projects were being delayed in the state due to the union government's "apathy" towards Karnataka, and that the Centre has failed to release its share of funds for various centrally sponsored schemes.
To a question about a number of MPs skipping Wednesday's meeting, the home minister said, "Not sure what the reason is. They, too, will have work to perform and hence wouldn't have attended the meeting." "State government and the CM have ensured that due respect is given to MPs that they are entitled to," he said, responding to a question about whether MPs were miffed with the state government.

The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has witnessed a 31 per cent decline in pilgrim footfall in the first two weeks of the pilgrimage this year compared to the corresponding period in 2024, a Dehradun-based environmental organisation said on Thursday.
A total of 6,62,446 pilgrims visited the Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri between April 30 and May 13 this year, while 9,61,302 pilgrims had visited the temples between May 10 and May 23 last year, the SDC Foundation said in an analysis. This reflects a decline of 2,98,856 pilgrims, or nearly three lakh, translating to an overall dip of 31 per cent, it said. Head of SDC Foundation Anoop Nautiyal attributed the drop in pilgrim arrivals to the rise in tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. "The military escalation between India and Pakistan in recent weeks has undoubtedly impacted public sentiment and travel confidence. There has been a slowdown in inter-state pilgrim movement, especially from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan," he said.
"The Char Dham Yatra, being highly dependent on interstate mobility and group travel, has been directly affected," he added.
Nautiyal said that the drop in numbers must be seen in the context of the current India-Pakistan situation. However, he expressed optimism that the Yatra will gain momentum in the days ahead. "Last year&rsquo;s data trends showed that the yatra typically peaks during the second fortnight of May and the first fortnight of June. With security conditions expected to stabilise between the two countries, we foresee a surge in footfall in the latter half of the month,&rdquo; he said. He also stressed the need for the Uttarakhand government to take corrective measures on a war footing to instil confidence among the stakeholders involved in the Yatra.
Citing the example of the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in Jammu and Kashmir, Nautiyal said, they moved swiftly by launching awareness campaigns awareness campaigns, boosted on-ground facilities, and reassured pilgrims through targeted communication.
"We need a similar proactive response in Uttarakhand&rdquo;, he said. The organisation has urged the state government to convene immediate consultations with key stakeholders such as district administrations, temple boards, hoteliers, mule operators, travel agencies, vyapar mandals and local groups to improve preparedness and improve the overall experience for pilgrims. &ldquo;Pilgrimage management must not be reactive. This concerns the livelihoods of thousands of families and businesses dependent on the seasonal Char Dham Yatra. Decisions must be taken promptly in light of the massive three-lakh dip in pilgrim numbers in the first two weeks," Nautiyal said. The SDC Foundation also reiterated the urgent need to implement recommendations it had made in its 2024 report titled "Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra: Pathways to Pilgrimage &ndash; Data, Insights, Challenges and Opportunities", submitted to the state government.
&ldquo;We had called for clear protocols on carrying capacity, crowd regulation, environmental safeguards, and real-time communication. Unfortunately, many of these remain unaddressed,&rdquo; he added.

"I wanted to visit places outside the airport as well. So, I went to the Polo View market and interacted with the locals. They are worried about the harm tourism has suffered. Tourism has ebbed after the incident (Pahalgam attack) and we have to work to revive it," Naidu told reporters here.
He said tourism in Kashmir had witnessed a boom in the past five years whih could be figured from the arrivals at the Srinagar airport.
"Airport arrivals increased from 25 lakh passengers in 2019 to about 45 lakh in 2024. That has benefited the people here. The government will try to restore tourism as it was (before the attack) as soon as possible and also boost it further," Naidu said.
"We will provide wahtever support is required from the civil aviation ministry. We are working under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has taken Kashmir forward with a vision and people have benefited from it," he added.
The civil aviation minister said connectivity between Srinagar and other parts of the country has been restored after a temporary halt in the wake of Operation Sindoor.
"I have come to review (the functioning of) Srinagar airport as we want normalcy to return... We have resumed Srinagar airport's connectivity with the other parts of the country.
"We interacted with all officers and staff and thanked them for their display of courage in such tiring times. The entire nation is proud of our armed forces for giving a befitting reply to terrorists with a targeted approach through Operation Sindoor," the Union minister added.

Five persons were killed and two others injured on Thursday when a private company's helicopter on its way to the Gangotri shrine crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi district, officials said.
The helicopter carrying a total of seven people, including the pilot, crashed on the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway at around 8:45 am.
According to information received from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the helicopter belonging to AeroTrans Services Private Limited crashed and fell into a gorge about 200-250 metres deep.
The SDRF said the helicopter had left from Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun for Kharsali helipad in Yamunotri. Capt Robin Singh was flying the helicopter, the SDRF said. While four on board were from Mumbai, two others hailed from Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
The administration has been instructed to provide all possible help to the injured and investigate the accident, he said, adding that he is constantly in touch with officials and monitoring the situation.

Adityanath instructed officials to use computers to process all financial transactions to ensure accountability and transparency.
Praising several digital initiatives, including a state-level call centre, online attendance systems, 10-seater help desks, geofencing of sachivalayas, and internet calling facilities, he said village assistants be mandatorily provided with 15 days of computer training.
Adityanath also underlined the need for timely desilting of ponds and compulsory rainwater harvesting.
Reiterating the state's commitment to rural sanitation, CM Adityanath called for regular maintenance and cleaning of community toilets and timely payment of honorariums to staff.

Police in Maharashtra's Latur city have registered a case against the owner of a private hostel for allegedly assaulting a student with a belt after the latter entered its premises.
A video of the incident, which occurred on April 28 in the hostel of a coaching class, has gone viral of social media.
The case was filed on Wednesday against the accused, Hanumant Jadhav, at the Shivajinagar police station.
According to sources, the accused confronted victim Soham Biradar, a student, when he visited the hostel. He attacked the student with a belt. When the victim tried to explain to him that he was looking for accommodation. However, the argument turned into a heated exchange, and Jadhav not only beat him but also forced him to apologise before two girls as seen in the video.
As the video sparked outrage, a police constable filed a complaint on May 14, based on which the case was registered.

The Supreme Court on Thursday paved way for a Uttar Pradesh government scheme to develop the Shri Banke Bihari Temple corridor in Mathura for the benefit of scores of devotees.
A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma allowed the Uttar Pradesh government's plea to utilise the funds of Shri Banke Bihari Temple only for the purchase of 5-acre land around the temple to create a holding area.
"We permit the state of Uttar Pradesh to implement the scheme in its entirety. The Banke Bihari Ji Trust is having fixed deposits in the name of the deity/temple...the state government is permitted to utilise the amount lying in the fixed deposit to acquire the land proposed," it said.
The top court, however, said the land to be acquired for the purposes of development of the temple and corridor should be in the name of the deity/trust.
In the process, it modified the November 8, 2023 order of the Allahabad High Court on a PIL filed by the Uttar Pradesh government which accepted the state's ambitious scheme but refused to permit the state to utilise the temple funds.
The bench observed as the court was in seisin of the cause qua the administration and safety of temples in the Braj region, it was in public interest to decide the issue raised by Uttar Pradesh government expeditiously.
Under the proposed scheme placed on record by the state for development for the temple, the court said, 5 acre land around the temple had to be acquired and developed by constructing parking lots, accommodation for the devotees, toilets, security check posts and other amenities.
The high court observed in its order on November 8, 2023, the acquisition of land around the temple and the consequent development project was crucial to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.
The bench observed the state government would incur costs of over Rs 500 crore to develop the corridor and had proposed to utilise the temple funds for purchasing the land in question which was denied by the high court.
The Uttar Pradesh government pointed out the dire situation of the Banke Bihari Temple in Mathura and the lack of proper administration and amenities.
The temple, spread over a limited area of only 1,200 square feet, has a daily footfall of 50,000 devotees, which was between 1.5 and 2 lakh on the weekends and upwards of 5 lakh during festivals, it said.
The government said the Uttar Pradesh Braj Planning and Development Board Act, 2015 was enacted for the development, preservation and maintaining the Braj Heritage in Mathura district.
Under the Act, it said, a parishad with necessary expertise to administer the temples in the region was constituted, and accordingly its services could be utilised for appointing administrator for these temples.
The bench, on the other hand, said a civil suit had been pending for over 25 years with only the court receiver running the show indicating "maladministration" running "deep and wide".
Prominent temples--Radha Vallabh Mandir, Vrindavan; Dauji Maharaj Mandir, Baldeo; Nandkila Nand Bhawan Mandir, Gokul; Mukharbind, Goverdhan; Danghati, Goverdhan; Anant Shri Bhibhushit, Vrindavan and Mandir Shree Ladli Ji Maharaj, Barsana-- in the region were all under the grip of receivers and most of them were managed by practising advocates of Mathura, it added.
The bench noted that some other temples in the area, including the Shri Banke Bihari Temple was being administered by a civil judge.
"It is an established fact that the historical temples are old structures and require proper upkeep and other logistic support, and added to the fact is that in a large number of temples, receivers have been appointed for decades now which was originally intended to be a stop-gap temporary measure," it noted.
The bench found it "unfortunate" that courts when appointing receivers, did not consider that Mathura and Vrindavan, were the two most sacred places for Vaishnav Sampradayas and, therefore, "persons from Vaishnav Sampradayas should be appointed as receivers".

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Wada Bala Yousif Ahmed, who was residing at a paying guest accommodation in Maheru Colony here. The injured, Ahmed Mohammed Nour, also a Sudanese national, has been hospitalised in Jalandhar, police said.
In his police complaint, Nour said he, along with Wada and three female friends, were performing morning prayers when the assailants started abusing them. Two of them were carrying knives.
Nour said one of the assailants allegedly demanded his sister's phone number. When they were told to stop misbehaving, the assailants stabbed Nour and Wada in the chest and fled.
A local resident, Prabhat Dubey, came to the injured students' help and took them to a hospital, where doctors declared Wada brought dead, police said.
In his complaint, Nour named the six assailants -- Abdul Ahad of Karnataka and Kunwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoaib, Sushank Shaggy and Yash Vardhan Rajput, all residents of Maheru Colony.
Police said the accused were residing in a rented accommodation in Maheru village near the university.
Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Amid a bird flu scare in Uttar Pradesh, 'Pataudi', an adult Asiatic lion from the Gorakhpur zoo, died during treatment at the Kanpur zoo on Thursday, officials said.
The lion born at the Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden in Gujarat's Junagadh had been ailing for the past few weeks. Medical reports revealed severe infections in his liver and pancreas, the officials said.
As his condition deteriorated, Pataudi was shifted to the Kanpur zoo for advanced care under expert veterinary supervision, where he died on Thursday, Gorakhpur zoo director Vikas Yadav said.
Following the recent death of a tigress named 'Shakti' at the Gorakhpur zoo and confirmation of H5 avian influenza virus by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, on Wednesday, 13 samples from the Gorakhpur zoo were sent to the NIHSAD for testing.
"The virus is highly contagious and can spread from birds to other animals and even humans. Preventive measures are critical," Yadav said.
The zoo staff have been instructed to strictly adhere to all the safety guidelines as part of the ongoing containment efforts, the official said.
Pataudi was transferred to the Etawah Lion Safari from Junagadh on September 26, 2019, and later brought to the Gorakhpur Zoo in February 2021 along with lioness Maryam.
When he was shifted to Gorakhpur, officials said he was around eight years old.
