Four Arrested in Manipur Over Alleged Militant Activities

Imphal, Jul 30 (PTI) Security forces have arrested four individuals, including three militants from two banned groups, in operations across three districts of Manipur for alleged involvement in criminal activities, according to police statements on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, two active cadres of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL) were detained from Nongada Awang Leikai in Imphal East and Langthabal Kunja in Imphal West, a senior officer reported.

One of these militants was implicated in a recent shooting incident at Napet Palli village in Imphal East, and is also accused of transporting arms and ammunition for the underground faction. A 9 mm pistol with a magazine was seized from this individual, as revealed by the police.

In another operation, a member of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was apprehended on Monday from Haokip Veng in Imphal East, the officer disclosed.

Additionally, a 45-year-old man was taken into custody from Kairang Umang Mayai Leikai, his place of residence in Imphal East, for his alleged association with criminal activities. This individual is part of a criminal group, and two firearms were confiscated from his possession, the officer added.

The police have intensified intelligence-based combing and search operations to tackle those engaged in extortion and other criminal activities across the state. Security operations have been ongoing in Manipur since ethnic violence erupted two years ago. More than 260 individuals have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced due to ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.

The central government imposed President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 following Chief Minister N Biren Singh's resignation. The state assembly, though mandated to serve until 2027, remains under suspended animation.
